NDP won't drop Rahim Jaffer case;
1. Justice committee summons. Joe Comartin isn’t giving up on his bid to get to the bottom of the Rahim Jaffer plea bargain – and he’s asking the Ontario Attorney-General and the Ontario Provincial Police to come before a Commons committee to explain themselves.

The NDP justice critic will move a motion next Tuesday calling for two days of hearings into the affair that saw Mr. Jaffer, a former Conservative MP from Edmonton, receive a $500 fine after he pleaded guilty to careless driving. More serious charges of impaired driving, possession of cocaine and speeding were dropped.

Since the deal came to light, Mr. Comartin has said Ontario justice officials need to shed more light on the circumstances so that Canadians do not believe favourtism was at play. Mr. Jaffer is married to Helena Guergis, a junior cabinet minister.

Mr. Comartin’s motion asks that the justice committee prepare a report “with recommendations if any on the results of the Committee’s investigation.

1. Good for Mr. Comartin!
Jaffer's 'break' stinks badly and until information is provided that can show there was no special treatment for Jaffer, questions need to continue to be asked, imo.

I honestly don't anticipate a lot on this but every 'drip' into the bucket of slime the harper cabal is producing helps Canadians see what a disaster they are for Canada.

2. Probably not much will come of it
Unless there is a whistle blower out there, or something like that.

It keeps it in the spotlight, though.

3. Accountability is key to any government...
I am glad they are pushing this issue, kudos to the NDP.

Everytime I read about a guy getting off with an obviously soft sentence for something fairly serious I get bothered; especially under the circumstances and his obvious political history. I feel that some are treated as if they are indeed above the law, the inner circle looks to each other and says "hey, he's ok he's one of us". He isn't like the usual garbage that possesses cocaine, gets drunk and drives (risking peoples lives), he is "one of us", one deserving of special treatment. The obvious double standard and hypocricy is appalling; and for it to be so overt requires an explanation.

I would like them to start with the crown and the judge...the media should be hounding them with questions. I am sure the average officer walking the beat doesn't get a warm and fuzzy feeling when these instances occur while they risk their lives doing their work and see other people lose their lives due to a drunk driving incident.

4. Good
An opposition party can make this issue an election issue. Something like equal justice for all.

This to me seems like a sleeper. Much like "where's the beef". It can be brought back on the government as a big issue in an election. Something the tabloid readers can understand. Something the media can get their teeth into. It's simple. It impacts everyone.

5. Good
Good for the NDP. Without them as opposition we'd be stuck with Bloc and Liberals to stand for equality and justice in Ottawa.
