The Conservative government is now saying birth control is an option in its international maternal-health initiative after it appeared the Tories would exclude contraception in any of its programs.
"We are not closing doors against any options, including contraception, but we do not want a debate here or elsewhere on abortion," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in French in the House of Commons on Thursday.

Liberal foreign affairs critic Bob Rae said on Thursday that the Tories were contradicting a G8 summit communiqué of last year that included a commitment to "voluntary family planning" and "sexual and reproductive health care." He accused Canadian foreign policy of being "hijacked by the tea partiers."
But Oda said on Thursday that the government has said all along that it is not closing the door on any option that will save the lives of mothers and children, including contraception.

I do love it when the Harpocons have to reverse themselves like this, though. I think this kind of thing must drive our dictator wannabe of a PM crazy, and that makes me happy. I also love that Rae called them "tea partiers." Because, true. Associating the Cons with crazy American religious-right-libertarian types is good politics, I think, and it also happens to be an apt comparison.
