Pills, knife among items seized from victims' home
CALGARY — Police seized a “bottle of pills” and a “kitchen knife” from the ransacked Calgary home where Joshua Lall killed his wife, two daughters and a tenant before committing suicide last month, court documents say.

The documents are vague. They do not specify what kind of medication was recovered, whether it was a prescription or over the counter, to whom it belonged or whether the pills played a role in the tragedy. However, they do show that investigators took 17 items from the two-storey northwest home on May 28, the day the five bodies were discovered.

Health experts have said that mental illness is rarely the only factor involved when mentally ill people kill those closest to them. However, questions have been raised in recent years about certain medications prescribed for mental disorders.

In 2004, Health Canada issued a warning about anti-depressants known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors and serotonin noradrenaline re-uptake inhibitors.

“Patients of all ages taking these drugs may experience behavioural and/or emotional changes that may put them at increased risk of self-harm or harm to others,” Ottawa said in announcing stronger warnings to be placed on some medications.

Ottawa did not find a “direct link” between the medications and death, but the department said at the time it wanted to warn doctors and patients about the potential risks of drugs sold under the brand names Wellbutrin, Zyban, Celexa, Prozac, Luvox, Remeron, Paxil, Zoloft and Effexor.

As details of this incident came out, I thought SSRIs might well be implicated.
