Quebec to go it alone on Kyoto, Charest says

Canadian Press

LAVAL, Que. — Quebec Premier Jean Charest says he's ready to act alone to respect the Kyoto accord if the federal government reneges on its commitments.

"The Quebec government is resolutely committed to Kyoto and we intend to soon announce our policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Mr. Charest said Tuesday.

Mr. Charest said the policy favours conservation and renewable forms of energy such as hydro and wind power.

"With just the part which deals with saving energy, we'll succeed in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 9.3 megatons in Quebec," he told reporters in Laval, north of Montreal.

1. It sounds good, but it's just another load of Charest crap.
A bit like his sustainable development policy. Or any other policy, aside from the new parental leave program.

Mayber I should give him the benefit of the doubt, but this guy has srewed up so many things in only one mandate, it's a wonder his party hasn't kicked him out yet.

2. PM takes aim at Charest over Kyoto
OTTAWA, QUEBEC and LONDON, ONT. — Prime Minister Stephen Harper is shooting back at his Kyoto critics, including Quebec Premier Jean Charest, saying actions are more important than words on reducing greenhouse gases.

"There's lot of people around the world who have bold and ambitious statements about limiting greenhouse gases, but I am more interested to see what actual effective actions are undertaken," Mr. Harper said.

He was responding to comments from Mr. Charest, his closest provincial ally, who is putting pressure on Ottawa to respect its commitment to fight global warming.

Mr. Charest is also asking Ottawa for $328-million to help fund a provincial battle plan.

MNAs unite to call on Ottawa to honour Kyoto commitment
$328-million demand to fight climate change

The Charest government and the Parti Quebecois opposition agreed yesterday that Ottawa should help Quebec achieve its Kyoto goals to reduce emissions of greenhouse gas.

A PQ motion debated in the National Assembly denounced the federal government for its "step backward" on Kyoto, hoping to embarrass the Liberal government of Premier Jean Charest, which has close ties with Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Tory government.

"The Liberal government of Quebec has hitched itself to the Conservative government in Ottawa," Louise Harel, acting PQ leader in the absence of Andre Boisclair, told the assembly.

The Liberals proposed an alternative to the PQ motion, calling on Ottawa in a more conciliatory tone "to respect its international commitments and the objective of reducing greenhouse gases, as established by the Kyoto Protocol."

3. The procession of the Prime Minister weighs heavy

The procession of the Prime Minister weighs heavy

The Press

At the time when the Conference on the climatic changes opened in Bonn, a few days ago, the procession of the Prime Minister Stephen Harper gained in power with the addition of large commercial vehicles sport particularly polluting.

This decision, which occurs whereas the government moves away from the protocol of Kyoto, made leap the deputies of the opposition joined by the Press. They deplore that Stephen Harper deals more with his presidential airs of environment.

“A caricature of George Bush would be said! the deputy néo-democrat Pat Martin launched. All that misses, it is a large sign where it would send the protocol of Kyoto at the devil! It is all the more ironic as it arrived at the moment when its Minister for the Environment was attacked in Bonn for his bad management of Kyoto.”

a few weeks ago I saw his motorcade drive past with 15+ limos and SUVs, several motorcycle cops, and a half dozen cruisers.

5. Well, now, it looks like English, and probably sounds like English,
but it remains stubbornly not English. Maybe Babelfish would have translated it better.
