Nova Scotia legalizes same-sex marriage!
Decision from the NS Supreme Court today. Evening news showed the first gay couple getting their license!

A couple of old farts in the legislative assembly were huffing and puffing about an appeal, but the Justice Minister sez it's not going to happen.

It's a good day!

1. So we should be seeing the complete breakdown of
Nova Scotian society any time now.

2. That's 5 provinces
and a territory now.

It'll shortly be all of Canada

3. Well, except Alberta...
...for a while, at least. Ralph (Rumpot) Klein swears it'll never happen while he's premier. Of course, he might bow to the prevailing winds and swear that he was drunk when he said that--which would be true, of course. He's drunk all the time, anyway.

4. Saskatchewan next!

The Saskatchewan government has said it won't contest the legal challenge for the right to marry, that a lesbian couple has launched. So I suspect it won't be long before we add another province to the list. Yay!

5. I think that this battle is all but won!
Well, except for Ralph Klein's threat about invoking the Notwithstanding clause, which he can always change his mind about ("Huh? I must have been drunk when I said that!!!" "Um, yer always drunk, Mr. Premier..." "See? I told you so!").

Nova Scotia was the same slam-dunk that Saskatchewan will be--suit by a couple, no resistance from the provincial gov't., decision by the court based on precedent... et voila.

Now that NS has gone down the road, I expect the other Atlantic provinces will soon follow, then it's just Manitoba and Alberta, assuming Saskatchewan is a done deal.

My only quibble is that this lets Martin off the hook for being too chickenshit to just ram it through parliament and have done with it. But then he's been pretty disappointing on this and a lot of other issues. Not going to be a long-lived minority government, I suspect.
