DE PERE — I’m responding to a letter criticizing my statement regarding the DNR “Gestapo.” I learned the writer is actually a Madison resident. It’s unfortunate he lives in Madison and still feels it’s his prerogative to control other people’s property in my district.
I stand by my comments on DNR Gestapo tactics. The following are examples of the DNR strong-arm tactics.
• Once a DNR state employee decided a farm field with growing alfalfa was a “wetland” in the village of Denmark. The action was found inaccurate.
• A manmade ditch in Calumet County was designated a “navigable stream” even though its grass was mowed. This was also proven to be untrue.
• The DNR cited a constituent for placing crushed limestone on a path, saying it was “hazardous material.” Never mind the entire Niagara Escarpment is limestone. The owner paid an $8,000 fine.
• The DNR drove Ashley Furniture to expand its business in another state, cutting 300 jobs, because they determined the field where Ashley parked its semi-trucks was a wetland.
More recently, the DNR is preventing Menards from expanding because a cornfield is a stopover spot for migratory birds — thus, possibly losing hundreds of more jobs thanks to the DNR.
