I had someone from Sheboygan tell me today how much he hates Madison... and that the reason the economy is so bad is because the government is giving all its money away to poor people...and the greatness of America is in its manufacturing jobs.

He does all his shopping at Walmart. I asked him what percentage of the goods sold at Walmart were made in America and he said most of them.

I gave up. Facts don't work. :hide:

2. take heart
I know quite a few people from Wisconsin who are voting for Obama.
BTW I missed Obama's speach in Green Bay last week by about an hour. Very bummed, but the crowd that was leaving just as I got there, caught in the traffic jam, seemed very happy and upbeat.

3. Well...Madison does the reputation of being...
"People's Republic Of Madison..." :-)

But while a few in Sheboygan are fairly liberal, they are severely outnumbered.
Not out-thought, though.

Just look in the editorial section, at the comments in The Sheboygan Press.

Whines about "the liberal media letting Obama off the hook," calling CNN, NPR and PBS "communist," and Drudge "balanced."

4. That is so true
When I used to travel across Wisconsin alot, I could tell the difference from greater Dane county and non-Dane county. LaCrosse is not too bad, but it changes rapidly towards Sparta, Elroy and Tomah. It really stands out in the Wisconsin Rapids and Necedeh areas (Juneau and Adams counties are really red). It gets a bit better by Manitowoc but not too much. It is much bluer overall around the lakes and rivers than the inner woods.

28. The area from Green Bay
West to Wausau then southeast to between Lake Michigan and Lake Winnebago down to the Fond du Lac is whacked. Steeped in multiple winger AM radio personalties exposure and Religious Radio, these Wisconsinites are so deluded you CAN NOT discuss politics in any practical sense.

Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 05:41 AM by fudge stripe cookays
They'e popping up like toadstools. I drive from 67th and Center out Capitol to Brookfield and out Lisbon to Sussex.

Morons morons everywhere. Who'd have thought after 8 years of this shit, these idiots would still buy the load of crap? I don't want to hear ANYONE here EVER gripe about Texas. EVER. It's red, but people just assume you're Republican, and they don't ram it down your throat like they do here.

I had to take a detour to work the other day and went out Appleton part of the way. Obama office! NOW I know where to pick up a sign!

7. Yard signs don't vote.

Wisconsin will be a strong win for Obama.

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/

In addition:
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/09/breaking-obama-campaign-organizers.html

In a controversial move sure to upset millions of people, Barack Obama’s campaign has decided to forgo the traditional time-wasting distribution of chum (yard signs, bumper stickers, etc.) to try and win the election.

Settling on what they call a “get voters to register by approaching them on the phone and at the door with an army of volunteers” strategy, Obama’s senior staff has directed state, regional, and local field organizers to use their finite time to make tangible progress toward winning.

It’s an approach that has ruffled some Democratic feathers.

That got me concerned, and I headed out to the Leesburg, Virginia, Obama office to see about getting myself one, thinking that some visibility for the Democratic ticket on my street was more critical than ever. My neighbors sometimes need "permission" to display their Democratic preferences, even though our Republican friends don't seem to wait for anyone's invitation.

Despite Obama’s 100% name recognition, opponents of the “maybe worry about visibility after registration deadlines close” strategy pronounced the situation “dire” on the front page of Daily Kos yesterday.

9. Nope, but they get potential volunteers in the door
And they get neighbors talking to neighbors.

The yard sign attitude you and so many Dems express is very 2 dimensional thinking and a mistake, imho. If a county party is geared up and develops plans to maximize the use of "chum," it can be very productive in recruiting volunteers and building a local grassroots organization that can actually support candidates at all levels physically and financially.

10. A yard sign may be the only thing a person CAN do for the campaign
Some people just can't give any time (or much money) for various reasons--disability, full schedule of familly responsibilities, etc. Putting up a yard sign or wearing a button gives them a way to help and cements them to the candidate so they're much less likely to change their minds. And as you say, it's a conversation starter. It can be awkward to go up to a neighbor and start talking politics, but the button or sign is a silent communication that the other person can pick up on.

13. Um
"The yard sign attitude you and so many Dems express"...

Whatever... All I did was try to explain that it's NOT a direct indication of how the election will go and that there is deliberate efforts in Obama campaign to focus elsewhere. I'd rather have the campaign focus on registering voters than procuring/funding yard signs.

14. Ah, but you can't "focus" on doing anything without volunteers
and if chum brings them in, it's integral - not tertiary to getting elected.

I agree it's not a direct indication of winning or losing. My comment on attitude wasn't intended to be snarky - simply stating a fact. I apologize if you were offended. :hi:

12. This person had a nephew who was killed by his babysitter
in Texas. So he urged the rest of the (Catholic) family to speak out against the death penalty in court and be all pious about it. The guy got life in prison, no parole. But the repukes point was to enjoy knowing the killer was being raped in prison for the rest of his life. He doesn't object to the death penalty at all.

17. Walmart used to try to buy American back in the days
when Sam was still running it. Now it's a slogan from a by-gone era that some people still think holds true.

No, facts really don't work with some people. They don't trust anything they hear from anyone--unless it is their favorite RW radio show host, or maybe some anonymous email that circulates into their inbox that agrees with the opinion they already hold.

18. I just drove to Missouri and back
on Friday and Saturday. I listen exclusively to Air America Radio in Madison so I was looking forward to picking up some talk radio in other parts of the country. I did hear some non-partisan stuff in Illinois in Friday morning where people were calling in about the VP debate - which was pretty evenly divided. Half the people thought Palin was a silly pageant queen, and the other half thought the country needed to elect someone with military experience... This wasn't right wing radio. There were some Obama/Biden supporters.

I did pick up RW radio but I can't stand listening to it.

In Missouri I heard a radio station discussion of energy options which said that both Republicans and Democrats were ignoring any options that weren't lucrative for corporations. They said we should be looking into geothermal energy. I saw equal numbers of McCain and Obama signs. Interesting.

20. Obama is leading by 9 points.
We have same day voter registration. Lots of people are voting early and and voters are much more on guard for problems because of what has happened in the last two elections. I think we are going to be ok.

21. I guess it depends on the poll
The last one I saw from Electoral-Vote.com is 49-43 Obama. That's OK, but Kerry won by less than 1 percent. There are a lot of rednecks in this state outside of a few university dominated areas, so I am still a bit nervous.

What poll are you referring to?

You can't even run as a republican. The 3 candidates for the assembly are all Dems, and that winner basically will win the race against whatever sacrificial lamb that the pubs run.

31. That was a reasonable question you asked considering how
adament this Republican was about the connection between jobs-manufacturing-and products. Another question would of been to ask what percentage of jobs were shipped over seas via Republican leadership? I heard Gov. Doyle's speach at the Denver convention talk about manufacturing gear boxes for solar power. So that is something active going on with manufacturing from Madison.
