Who’s fed up? Alfredo Delgado Taylor Daily Press | 4 comments

Teachers and those who dedicate their lives working to prepare children for a better future were held in the highest esteem. I have always held teachers with the utmost respect, as equal to members of the clergy. Why? Because I witnessed them sacrifice of themselves and their families to share their knowledge, experience and outlook on life to better serve their students. Unfortunately, over the past few years that respect has eroded statewide, and their authority and appreciation has taken a backward step in favor of unparalleled political correctness and misguided personal ambition.

Because of the priority given to public education, many innovative ways to fund that goal were passed by the Texas state legislature. One of the most creative funding methods was authorized by the legislature in 1991 through the Texas Lottery, and that administrative responsibility was placed on the newly established Texas Lottery Commission. According to Texas State Lottery documents, the Lottery has generated $17 billion dollars in proceeds from the sale of lotto tickets. Since 1997, $12 billion dollars have been allocated to the Texas Public Education fund. In 2010, those funds were redirected away from the public school fund and given to the Fund for Veterans Assistance to help Texas veterans.

1. "an apple with a worm in it"
Remember when children would give teachers an apple to show their appreciation? Well, current Texas government leadership has provided teachers and other school district personnel an apple with a worm in it. During each of his three campaigns for the governorship, James Richard Perry, otherwise known as Rick Perry, swore allegiance to and made a firm commitment to make education of Texas public school children his number one priority. Evidently, voters believed him and his pledge when he stated that “education was the most important investment a state can make in its people.” He further stated his willingness to enrich incentives for quality teachers and target expansions in math, reading and science curriculum. Texans are realizing they were duped and see Perry’s agenda clearly as one of furthering his political career and misleading the electorate about his hidden agenda on education.

Excellent editorial!
