Dog Dumping Ground
I live in Houston, and I saw this video clip on CNN last week:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/07/15/cnnheroes.hoffman.dog.rescue/index.html

I could not believe this was happening to so many dogs in Houston's "Corridor of Cruelty", so I sent an e-mail to Mayor Parker to ask if she could help in any way. I received the following response, however, after reading it, I'm not exactly sure what Mayor Parker or the City of Houston is going to do to address the situation. Do any of you have any other ideas of how to end the suffering of these poor dogs living in Houston?

.....You are absolutely right that the atrocities that occur in the Corridor of Cruelty are reprehensible. The City of Houston’s direct enforcement capabilities, via BARC, unfortunately are limited due to the fact that the Corridor lies primarily outside of City limits. We do pick up a number of animals from the area, or accept them after good natured folks bring them to us, and do our best to get these poor animals as humane care as possible.

As you point out in your email, the only real long term solution to this problem is for the City of Houston to continue to work proactively with the Harris County law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute the individuals that are abusing animals. The compassionate rescue and foster organizations are not going to be able to solve this problem, although they will continue to selflessly dedicate their scarce time and resources to helping those they can.

As sad as this situation is, I am happy it received such exposure. It is precisely through increased awareness of this problem, and others like it, that will move the residents of the Houston area to not accept this type of behavior any longer.

Thank You

3. Some very good people in Houston on this board
Someone posted about this "Corridor of Cruelty" before. It really is heartbreaking. Deborah Hoffman is an angel! I wish I had a million dollars to contribute to her organization.

Here is an earlier thread on "The Story of Charlie Bear" just one of the pups from the "Corridor of Cruelty". It will make you cry - but in a good way. Sad but hopeful.

4. Will the residents of Houston step up to the challenge?
If the residents of Houston won't accept this type of behavior perhaps the city will increase their efforts to help these poor animals.
