Texas GOP ousts chair, wants Ariz. immigration law

DALLAS — Fired-up Republican activists in no mood for compromises threw out their party chairwoman Saturday, then bucked Texas Gov. Rick Perry by pushing for a crackdown on illegal immigration similar to Arizona's new law.

Some delegates at the Republican state convention also called for a nonbinding resolution calling on House Republicans to oust their own speaker, Rep. Joe Straus of San Antonio, considered too moderate for many of the bedrock conservatives meeting in Dallas this weekend. Convention organizers ruled the Straus resolution out of order.

(snip)

In a sometimes chaotic and raucous roll-call vote, delegates overwhelmingly decided to ditch their firebrand leader, conservative activist Cathie Adams, in favor of Houston businessman Steve Munisteri. Munisteri had focused his campaign on the party's $500,000 debt, saying Republicans should be in better financial shape since they control both houses of the Legislature and all statewide offices.

The immigration proposal, a hard-line approach that Perry has said isn't right for Texas, was one of several initiatives debated as delegates wrapped up the two-day convention. The Republican Party platform is a blueprint of the policies that GOP activists want elected officials to pursue.

Delegates voted to include a plank advocating for a state law that would bar illegal immigrants from "intentionally or knowingly" living in Texas. Similar to Arizona's strict law that has sparked nationwide debate, the proposal would require local police to verify U.S. residency when making arrests.

No surprise that the party base in the TRP is rabid right wing all right. What's funny is that they ousted Cathie Adams the former president of the Texas Eagle Forum. She didn't even last a year! :nopity:

1. Texas Republicans add Arizona-like residency checks to platform

Texas Republicans add Arizona-like residency checks to platform

(snip)
The proposal, similar to the controversial law in Arizona, is part of the legislative priorities section of the platform approved Saturday at the state GOP convention in Dallas. Two state lawmakers have already promised to introduce such bills next year, although previous efforts to toughen immigration policies have come up short in past sessions. Gov. Rick Perry has said he doesn’t think Texas should adopt a law similar to Arizona’s.

(snip)
"It’s a good document," said state Rep. Phil King, R-Weatherford. "The Platform Committee did a good job."

Illegal immigration was the most pressing issue to delegates. The hard-line conservatives who dominated the convention wanted tough-minded legislation. But some delegates, mindful that the party must court Hispanic voters, worried that the platform went too far.

(snip)
Dianne Costa, a Republican and former mayor of Highland Village, asked delegates not to pass a measure that opposes any path to citizenship for those here illegal.

"This policy is mass deportation," she said. "This is not what you say it is."

Costa says the platform makes it tougher for her to recruit Hispanics for the GOP.

No kidding Dianne Costa - it should be a lot tougher to be a Hispanic Republican in Texas. And I have to wonder why you want to be a member of that party to begin with.

2. They are having the same Purity issues our party is. Glad to see it.
This is great news for White, and bad news for Perry, who will now have to campaign against his party's platform.

4. It is good for us if we can capitalize on it
It means really getting this message of hate out this year to all the state's Latinos. White has got to have a ground game in the border area.

And you know this is one reason Perry is such a chickenshit about debating White because that Arizona law is going to be a big issue and he just prefers not to deal with it. His rabid right wing base does not want to hear Perry keep saying that the AZ law is not for Texas. They want Texas to start setting up tent cities just like AZ is proposing.

17. White and his camp have got to get these important messages...
out. They're going to have to be the ones to set the agenda, and they're going to have to be more aggressive- not boisterous and offensive, but try to make Slick Rick address the subject. Texans need to see and hear more of a fighting spirit from White. Can't be Mr. Nice Guy and expect to win this election. I know it's early, but we can't let opportunities like this pass us by.

18. I totally agree
I've been wishing White would hurry up and go negative on Perry too. Perry is not nice and no sense wasting time being nice to him.

Hit him White -take a big swing at Perry and hit him!

Texas GOP gets tougher on immigration
Some say platform adopted at convention could deter Latino voters

DALLAS — Texas Republicans adopted another get-tough policy on immigration and bilingual education on Saturday that some say will make it hard for the party to attract Hispanic voters at a time when the Texas population is turning increasingly Latino.

The platform encourages state lawmakers to create a Class A misdemeanor criminal offense "for an illegal alien to intentionally or knowingly be within the State of Texas," and to "oppose amnesty in any form leading to citizenship for illegal immigrants."

Texas Republicans also want to limit citizenship by birth to those born to a U.S. citizen "with no exceptions." The platform calls for the end of day-labor work centers and emphasizes border security, encouraging "all means … (to) immediately prevent illegal aliens."

(snip)
Opponents challenged party members with differing views to make their voices heard.

"Your party platform is your brand. It represents your values and beliefs and what distinguishes you from Democrats," said state Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, D-San Antonio, chairman of the 44-member Mexican American Legislative Caucus.

(snip)
Hispanics will make up 78 percent of Texas' population growth over the next 30 years, compared with only 4 percent for whites, according to demographic projections. Minority children already make up 66 percent of the state's 4.8 million public school enrollment — and Hispanics could surpass whites in the state's overall population by 2015, estimates show.

That's right Trey - the Texas Republic Party is the party of hate. Keep it up Texas Republicans, keep the hate up pendejos, and we're going to remember every second of your hate when it becomes our state.

Libertarians, convening in Austin, pick candidates for November
Party chief: Libertarian Party this year has a good chance of influencing the debate between other parties and candidates

Joining state Republicans and Democrats in the spotlight this weekend, Texas Libertarians gathered Saturday in Austin to announce their own bold aspirations.

Libertarian delegates selected Kathie Glass , a 56-year-old attorney from Houston, to run against Republican Gov. Rick Perry and Democratic nominee Bill White for the governor's seat in November.

"In a three-way race, more than 33 percent takes it. We can do this," Glass told attendees. "A chance like this does not come around very often and may not come around again in our lifetimes."

(snip)
The Libertarian Party of Texas, which brands itself as fiscally conservative and socially tolerant, has met with limited success by advocating smaller government, greater fiscal responsibility and more personal liberties.

Oh and ass hat Kinky Friedman was their guest speaker. He can't decide what he is. and Independent, a Democrat and now a Libertarian. What a joke!

Slater: Texas Republicans display a siege mentality

For a party in power, there seem to be a lot of martyrs in the Texas GOP.

Rush Limbaugh says Democrats are the party of victims. But it was the Republicans at their state convention in Dallas this weekend who clearly saw themselves as the oppressed and mistreated.

"The fox is in the henhouse," said congressional candidate Stephen Broden of DeSoto of the myriad enemies bearing down on conservatives. "And they have one thing in mind — fried chicken salad."

For all the Republicans’ success in Texas, the barbarians are apparently at the gate: liberals, atheists, socialists, Hollywood, the media, a White House at work on wrecking the country and ruining their lives.

Everywhere you looked at the Dallas Convention Center, people were wearing their victimhood.

"I love my country but I fear my government," said a bumper sticker in the concession area.

:nopity:

I hope it is their swan song year. I can't wait til their nightmare watch is over.

VIDEO: Texas Republicans Support Arizona Style Immigration Laws
It's one thing to read about how Rick Perry's Republicans in Texas want to basically one-up Arizona, but it's quite another to actually watch their craziness. Check out this video (and pay close attention to the great suggestion, which is given with a 100% straight face, to possibly use "lasers or electric wires" to keep out illegal immigrants).

More gagging at hearing these nut bags spew their hate. :puke:

Truly disgusting.

15. But Sonia, They're NOT Bigoted, At Least That's What They'll Say In Public
But Sonia, the Texas Republican convention-goers aren't bigoted--at least that's what they'll say in public where a lazy-a@@, credulous corporate media corporate media will hear them.

Of course I don't believe 'em one blamed bit.

:argh:

-----

I suspect that the Texas Gopsters are going to find that their same old race-baiting ways alienate a lot of Texas' changing electorate. It may take a little while longer for the state-wide R's to get their first heads-up. And some of the R's holding down mostly-white districts may NEVER wise up. But it's coming.

16. Oh it's coming
Whether they like it or not. We've seen parts of this play before haven't we? One example was the Civil War, the south was willing to "die for" an inhumane value to defend "their way of life" i.e. ownership of slaves.

Another example was the Civil Rights Era and that battle and again the south was willing to fight a nation and abuse humans they deemed "unequal" to them. A carryover from the civil war.

Some people in the South never learn from their history so they are doomed to repeat it. And in this case they will have no choice because the white republican party of the south will not be the majority of the people in the south. And it will happen in Texas first.

Kicking and screaming we are going to be moving this state foward.
