Pictures from Memorial Day in Houston.

Members of Bay Area New Democrats, CodePink, and the organizers, the San Jacinto Democratic Veterans Brigade, planted a flag for every soldier killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in Herman park. The name of the fallen soldier was read as a flag with their picture, hometown, age, and how they were killed was placed in the ground.

2. Good job, y'all!
Here's something I've always wondered: Why is it that the peaceniks & Democrats are the ones always putting up flags & having prayer vigils for the soldiers in Iraq? I've never heard the war hawks doing that (although they've crashed our vigils locally & tried to hog the media attention. :eyes: ).

5. A few notes on the event.
By the way.........

We had people walk up and ask if they could plant a flag. A guy on a bicycle stopped and helped for an hour. He was in tears when talking with the news. A family came by and each one planted a few flags.

I missed the playing of taps. Last year after working 6 hours in the sun planting flags and reading each name, and listening to taps, it was very hard to keep back tears. (its a man thing) I am sure it was the same this year.

It took about 6 full hours to read the names and plant the flags. Next year it will be longer unfortuantely.

Kudos to those who worked from early in the morning to the evening. This was one of the BEST events in Houston for Memorial day.

6. Some more comments on this event
By the way. When I was in crawford, I took a picture of one of the flags that the San Jacinto Veterans Brigade used in the memorial. I wanted to see the name and picture of the person attached to the flag. So I took the picture and when I got home I told my daughter that I wanted to see the picture and who's flag it was. Here it is:

9. Yep! And it took my by surprise!!!!!
Wow. Is all I said.

In fact......I read a few names out on Sunday. I was having trouble pronouncing some, so as I read, I looked forward to the next name, and guess who's name I read?

Yep. Casey Sheehan. Geez.

Then I noticed a picture of a young girl. She was familiar. In fact I used her photo in a slide show I put together last week. I viewed her picture over and over again trying to get the pictures just right. And there she was on the list that I read.

Geez.

10. I was sitting in that very same park in 1999, went there on the 4th of
July to hear the Beach Boys in a free concert.
Only to get there and find out that the "free concert in the park" had been hijacked into a Bush campaign event, sponsored by "Enron".
They had the Confederate Air Force doing simulated bombing runs on downtown Houston and the obligatory WW2 re-enacted dogfights, along with fly overs from the Guard planes from Ellington.
And I'll never forget my Wife sitting on the grass with me, turning her head and telling me, "This guy is a war freak, if he gets in he's going to start a war".
How right she was.

12. (in my best Elvis voice) Thankyaverymuch....
I've been reading my news off of this website for almost 3 years now. It was only just recently I made an account to enable me to make comments.

I think I'm on the same wavelength as a lot of the people here.
