HELP! I need really good Kinky talking points
I went out with a very, very good friend last night - someone I run around with all the time and love to death and respect more than just about anyone - and she told me that she is looking for something to do that is productive, to give back to the community in her spare time (she is retired). I, of course, suggested politics since it is the season for that right now and I know all of her hot button issues. She immediately came back with, "well I'd do anything for Kinky."

I didn't get all anti-Kinky on her right off the bat, I just asked her why. She thinks he's smart, funny, has good ideas on education and couldn't really tell me anything else other than she has read his books and loves them and likes his music. She is older than me and has followed him since the 60's. She really knew quite a bit about him "in general", but really hardly anything about his politics.

I gently shared the very few specifics I knew about him that I could remember from this board that are pretty awful and then told her why I am supporting Chris Bell and how I have had a chance to talk with him personally and why I think it is so important to support the democratic candidate.

But, I sort of stumbled around. I realized that I DON'T have good Kinky talking points. Please give me some solid things I can say about why Kinky is so wrong for governor. I need factual things I can say to my smart, reasonable friends that are off track!

Thanks.

By the way, I may have recruited her as a Lampson volunteer. I am pretty convincing when it comes to that. :)

3. If you live in Dallas, two words: Laura Miller.
Exactly how far has a hotheaded, maverick, outsider reformer politician gotten us in Dallas? BUPKIS. We need someone who knows how to work the system that is in place, not just drink beer and piss all over it. Political organizations (and many nonpolitical ones) are a complex, turbulent river, with many treacherous undercurrents. It takes intelligence, guided by experience, to lead a branch of government, not cute songs and a flamboyant personality.

4. There are two diaries on BOR
posted by Ryan Goodland of Houston. Ryan pulled together a lot of good information, plus there are also several good responses from posters.

Try these two links.

7. Hell all I do is tell people he voted for bush in 2004.
They're usually so shocked and disgusted that knocks them right out of the kinky camp, right away.

It's worked for me on at least half a dozen people now, including some at my UU church.

9. Kinky is a child and doesn't give a damn about Texas.
Kinky is a Child. He wants to play at being Governor. I don't believe that he gives a damn about Texas. Unlike the Perry neocons I don't think that he would use the office to rob the state blind. Kinky is a shifty character and I would not even swear to that.

Texas desperately needs sober, grown-up, inspired, good government, reform leadership.

We don't need a pretend Governor riding around on a broomstick pony.

10. I know this has probably been talked to death but,
Is Kinky more likely to take votes from Perry or Bell? I could see some conservatives voting for the guy who are sick of the "business as ususal" nonsense going on in Austin.

11. People who know Kinky's know-nothing anti-progressive approach to most
issues would generally stay away from his candidacy, but many people who have signed his ballot petition don't know what creepy knuckle-dragger political stands he advocates on many issues. As a result, polling indicates Kinky takes about three times as many progressive and moderate votes as he takes conservative votes.

12. He seems progressive enough with
his love for animals (his sanctuary), review of the death penalty and his encouragement of bio fuels. KPFT (Pacifica Radio) saw fit to interview him. The radio station would surely not be interviewing right-wingers.

13. Kinky would be the best governor for cats, I agree. If I were a cat, I'd
vote for him. Also, I'm not sure what Kinky can accomplish with respect to biodiesel on a state level without federal support, but I'm glad to let him try.

But, Kinky waffles on the death penalty. His website says that he's not anti-death penalty, but he testified in court that he anti-death penalty).

Kinky waffles on reproductive rights. His website literally says he's not pro-choice in one part and that he's pro-choice in another part.

Kinky is GODAWFUL on immigration (and he waffles on this issue too -- but mainly he waffles from crazy-insane to crazy-fascist).

Kinky's school financing plan is a joke (privatizing physical education programs?).

Kinky's terrible on his budget plan (giving away revenue to wealthy property owners?).

Kinky's miserable on cronyism (he already picked out top appointments for campaign sponsors).

I don't know how much you love your cat, but I love my kids pretty much, and I rather have a governor who set our kids as a higher priority than our cats.
