Who's in at the moment, anyway?

1. Charles Soechting is the chair now
We need a dynamo, a DFT/DFA sort. The person who has earned it is Glen Maxey, but in our poisonous environment I have to worry about how that would work out. He has worked his rear off for the last three or four years for the causes that matter to Texans, he deserves recognition.

I don't think it matters if we had JC himself, Amendment Two demonstrated what we're dealing with here.

3. I'd really like to see Glen make a run as well.
Glen has really proven his activist "smarts" with the way he ran the Austin Coordinated Campaign. I mean, the sheer amount of voter registration they did -- what, they registered something like 90,000 new voters in 2004? It really demonstrates a phenomenal level of organization to accomplish something like that.

Although I am not sure if he would be interested, and if the TDP chair is where he can do the best work for all of us. :D

10. Oooh, that hurt
To me, Amendment II will always be about guaranteeing GLBTs the right to keep and bear arms - not denying them civil unions, insurance, and the ability to adopt unwanted children.

11. That brings up an interesting question
I wonder which amendment number Proposition 2 got assigned. Don't we have, like 2,583 amendments to the Texas Constitution? Whatever number it is should be a number that lives in infamy. Like 21.06.

2. Dr. Dennis Teal has my early consideration
He's a member of the Van Os for Attorney General steering committee.

I would like -- and expect to see -- a Latino, or a Latina, run for the chair.

4. Is he a Houstonite?
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 09:44 AM by crispini
(Houstonian?) Any other notable credentials in organizing or activism? Tell us more. :D

And it's my understanding that usually the Vice Chair is nominated, in alternate years, by the Hispanic Caucus or the Black Caucus, and this is the year that the Hispanic Caucus will be nominating the Vice Chair. Which I suspect will put a spoke in the prospect of a Latino or Latina running for TDP chair.

5. No, he's from E. Texas
Corrigan, specifically.

Here's a month-old post from BOR which names several prospects:

7. Teal is definitely in and at least one Latino
Charlie Urbina Jones, a lawyer from San Antonio, introduced himself to the PPC at the last SDEC meeting saying he was going to run.

The San Antonio Express named a few more potential candidates
Demo chairman post is not for the weak

When Texas Democrats gather in Fort Worth next summer for their annual convention, they will select a new state party chairman to replace Charles Soechting, who is not seeking re-election.

San Antonio lawyer Charlie Urbina Jones is seeking the seat, and other potential candidates include Sherry Boyles, a former candidate for Texas Railroad Commissioner, and Boyd Richie of Graham.

Some of this info is old. We do have two Democrats running for Governor. Felix Alvarado is the second. Sherry Boyles was a great candidate for TRC, a real fiery speaker as well.

8. Let me clarify a point about Urbina Jones
He's half Irish and half Mexican. That's why I said one Latino in the race.

9. I like Boyd Richie for TDP chair
He's a long-time yellow dog Democrat, and both he and his wife Betty are strong supporters of Texas Democratic Women. Betty is on the DNC.

12. I've heard that Teal is not running
He and Ritchie are friends and when Teal discovered that Ritchie was running he bowed out. Now, I didn't hear it from the Donkey's mouth but I consider the source very reliable.
