Kurita Says she would oppose CAFTA
<snip>
The campaign moved east to Wilson County later that day and Kurita spoke to a group at the Robert Pruitte Democratic Celebration. Kurita took a few minutes to speak to the crowd and assured them that on trade issues, she was tired of hearing about the kind of free trade that has meant job losses for Tennesseans. She said that if she were in the U.S. Senate right now, she would oppose CAFTA and said, "It's about time we had fair trade that protects the American worker."

I don't have a link but received this in an email from her campaign site.

4. The Congressman is undecided on CAFTA
He is really concerned about the jobs that are leaving our country due to the skills defecit in our country. He feels we must step up our game because China and India are currently graduating almost 50 times as many ph.Ds as the US does each year. One reason he is running for Senate is because he thinks we have dropped the ball on education and he intends to fix that when elected to the Senate.

As for CAFTA, Congressman Ford points out that it does have srong protections for intellectual property and express shipments, along with textiles. However, it is poor on environmental, labor, and sugar protections in comparison to the forementioned areas. He also makes the point that the Bush Administration has an awful track record on enforcing labor and environmental laws in other agreements.

As it is now, he is undecided on the agreement, however, he is going to work to try to improve the areas of cocern he has.

5. I think the general concept of the program
has some good things, but there are some issues I'm not fond with CAFTA. Bush needs to close the loop-holes but I don't expect him to since I think he's purposley trying to ruin our economy as a country so more people will join the military and he doesn't have to have a draft. That's why I was so happy to hear Bredesen signing that bill to where jobs can't leave to another country.

6. Yea
As the Congressman said, there are problems with it, which he intends to work on. In my personal opinion, if he does work to help close the loopholes and mend the areas that do need fixing, I am for it. I think NAFTA has paid off since it was started and we have not even seen the biggest payoffs yet.

7. The loopholes is my biggest problem
I used to talk to someone frequently and they were laid off from work for about six months. I'm lucky my dad has a good job with TVA and he's been there about fifteen plus years and isn't near retirement age (not even fifty yet). Too bad Frist wasn't a real Senator. He could take a note from Bredesen and come up with a bill to close loopholes. Of course Bush would never sign it and the rightwingers wouldn't let it get out of either Congress or the Senate cause it would show their hypocriacy with jobs.
