Daschle, Thune in virtual tie
Jon Walker
Argus Leader
published: 10/27/2004

75% say campaign 'negative'

An election judged "too close to call" five weeks ago is now even tighter as a survey shows Republican John Thune cutting into Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle's narrow lead.

Daschle holds a 49 to 47 percent edge over Thune as the two men scramble for last-minute supporters leading up to next Tuesday's election, according to a poll conducted for the Argus Leader and KELO-TV of Sioux Falls.

Daschle's 2-point lead is less than the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, meaning South Dakota's Senate race is virtually tied and reinforcing the need for both campaigns to get supporters out on Election Day.

The senator's lead has ranged from 2 to 7 points during the past 15 months in polls by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington, D.C., which conducts phone surveys of 800 likely South Dakota voters.

3. it'll be tight
but remember that at this point in 2002, Zogby and others had Thune beating Johnson by 4-5 points...it all comes down to GOTV, as usual.

5. I'm Scared...
I voted absentee, so chalk another one for Daschle. I am scared however, I was in Souix Falls this weekend and I saw quite a few Thune signs compared to Daschle signs. Souix Fu is usually a Daschle stronghold. Eek.
