About 120 members of the South Carolina Army National Guard are departing this weekend for Arizona to help improve the nation's border security, officials said.
Overall, some 2,000 members of the South Carolina Guard will participate in two- to three-week rotations in the exercises, which will last from February through May.
They will be joining the effort dubbed Operation Jump Start, which is operating in four states along the U.S-Mexican border, according to a release issued by Guard officials.
The support operation allows more border patrol agents to move into front-line positions, said a statement issued by the Guard.
President Bush inaugurated the effort in 2006 as a means of enhancing U.S. Customs and the U.S. Border Patrol's work against drug and weapons smugglers and illegal immigration.
