2. Dang - I'll be out of town that day
Oh well, I hope he will be back. I had the chance to see Howard last year at the same venue for a shorter period of time. Too bad the damn media set their sights on shooting down his campaign last year.

Yeah, Howard made some mistakes, but I think the big problem is he's too damn honest in this media day and age. He speaks the truth without the nuance. And that will never do!

I was supposed to work that night ... but a co-worker begged to pick up my shift. Yeeagh!

We should have DU nametags.

7. I just registered.
I'll be there probably in a sport jacket and tie. You can probably recognize me by my lapel pin, which is a mini-medal. I'll be wearing my Global War on Terrorism medal on my lapel.

8. Hey Allenberg
Are you going to protest at the RNC summer meeting?
I'm going with an anti-Santorum theme.

12. Unfortunately, I can't make it.
I so wanted to see Howard Dean in person but my husband could not rearrange his meetings for that afternoon to get home in time to watch the kids. That 5:30pm start time for the event was just unworkable for me on that date. :(

13. Regrets ...
I was excited to see Dean coming today as I’ll be in Pittsburgh today too. But looks like we’ll be at Children’s Hosp. way beyond 5:30 - so I’ll have to pass. :(
Hope you all Have fun!

And just so all you “fringe, radical left-wing” folks are good and fired up:

In honor of Governor Dean’s visit and his now infamous speech after the Iowa Caucus, the Young Republicans of Allegheny County are scheduled to host a Howard Dean “Scream Off” this Tuesday, July 19th, outside the Church Brew Works (3525 Liberty Avenue) at 5:15pm.
:spank:

Dean Said People Should “Stop Voting On Guns, Gods, Gays And School Prayer.” (“A Spirtual Struggle For Democrats,” The Washington Post, 11/27/03)

And to them this is a bad thing?

16. Man, oh man was Dr. Dean on fire.
Great speech by him, the vice president of the PA Dem party, the Lt Governor, and the councilwoman. The room was filled with electricity. Photos to come soon.

If anyone seen Jason Altmire, I was the short guy in the white shirt right behind him. He's tall.

Note: In the photo of the guy with the blue suit and jawline to the right, that's Jason Altmire, the guy running against Melissa Hart.

So is his wife, she has to be at least 5'10" Nice people both, but he didn't seem too enthused to be there for some reason. It was like he wanted to be somewhere else. That kind of bothered me.

I was trying to keep my eye out for the pin, but I missed you. I did see Jason there ... there were many interesting people at this event. I think that's Jon Pushinsky's head in your photos (tan jacket, blue shirt) - he ran for Common Pleas judge ... but unfortunately not elected. He was my favorite. :hi:

I was sitting right in front of the register at the bar closest to the stage. I took my jacket off which had my lapel pin and nametag. God it was hot in there. Man, was that place rocking or what?

22. It was pretty great ...
though I did get a bit prickly when he was talking about Casey (sorry, I can't help it) ... it all seems so contradictory. The overall vibe was incredibly positive. I love events like that. A veritable "who's who". My only other minor (as in teeny-weeny) peeve is that in 3 of 4 times that I've been in the same room as Dean over the past year - he has told the evangelical school teacher story. It is very inspirational and appropriate, but after travelling across the country all this time ... he has to have another story in that bag. (I can't be sure he didn't tell it the 1st time ... I had a couple of martinis so the details are a little sketchy). I do admire him so regardless. I was near you for a few minutes (admiring Jason) I was dressed in a black sleeveless sweater, long black skirt and curly dark hair. I probably just described half the women there ... but it was worth a shot

Did you get one of the League of Pissed Off Voters fliers? I guess they are holding a conference at Pitt August 4-7 ... which, I believe coinsides with the RNC conference. Could be interesting.

23. LOL Yeah,
that does describe alot of the women there. I was between two older ladies, and a girl sitting on the bar with a striped shirt. YES! Their Martinis were awesome! I ordered mine 50/50 up and it was delicious. $5.50 was a touch steep, IMO, but it beats the 10 bucks at the airport. I think my favorite speaker was the county councilwoman. Man, she was pissed off and passionate.

27. Tonight I stuck with beer ...

a little wheat, a little dunkel. The martini night was in NYC at a DFA fundraiser with Dean and Al Franken. It was held in a smallish bar (near Chelsea, I think). I tend to become a little goofy, so I refrained this evening. I've paid $10-15 for a martini ... luckily 2 is my limit. It's outrageous. I forget her name, but I think the woman you are speaking of was mentioned as a possible replacement for Baker Knoll, before they denied that that was their intention. She definitely pumped up the crowd.

On edit: Valerie McDonald Roberts. I knew it would come to me!

24. Wow, that was great.
Hot as hell, but good to see such a large crowd. I'm not good at crowd estimates, but they couldn't have squeezed in too many more.
The repubs outside were pretty lame. Nothing to see there.
Wonder if their 20 people will get the same press as the hundreds who were there to see Dr Dean.

Long, dark, curly hair? Near the bar?
I met a few people, but it was too hot to really mingle much.
I was near the front on the bar side. Blonde, navy jacket, pink shirt.

:hi:

25. We need to do this before hand ...
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 09:49 PM by PittLib
actually - we should plan to meet at something like Drinking Liberally sometime. I work evenings, but with a little notice I can make sure I'm off. The guy outside with the red, white and blue get-up was hilarious. The group was only 5-6 when I walked by around 5 o'clock. Just some dorky looking young men and a woman who obviously needs a reality check.

On edit: Drinking Liberally - Thursdays at Finnegan's Wake, 20 E General Robinson St (on the North Shore, across from PNC Park and the Warhol Museum). At Church Brew Works if there is a game.

I may go this Thursday. :toast:

the pitiful protest. How funny. I'll be waiting on the RNC people. I'm not relishing the thought.

On edit: Of course they only covered the "Young Republican Scream Off" ... and the forementioned woman (girl, actually) said that they decided to have a contest because they "aren't very good at protesting". She said a mouthful. Good little Bushies protest nothing, as to do so one would have to think.

31. A lot of DU'ers were near the front bar it seems....
:toast: :hi:

My wife and I were sitting at one of the round tables right in front of the end of the bar - right next to the big square one Mr. Altmire was talking at for a while...it was a bit strange he didn't get up on stage...but I will keep an open mind until I hear both candidates positions.

I thought Howard rocked. I have never seen him before...so I didn't mind the evangelical story - it was new to us and a great inspiration.
