Bonamici is the Dem. primary winner for Oregon C-1
Bonamici, Cornilles win primary races in Oregon's 1st Congressional District

The Oregonian projects that Democrat Suzanne Bonamici and Republican Rob Cornilles have won their primary contests in Oregon's 1st Congressional District.

Early returns show the two candidates with strong leads over a large field of candidates vying to fill the Northwest Oregon congressional seat left vacant after Democrat David Wu was forced out of office in August following a sex scandal.

Cornilles, who owns a Tualatin sports marketing firm, was winning more than 70 percent of the vote over four other rivals. Bonamici, a state senator from Beaverton, was winning about two-thirds of the vote in the eight-way Democratic primary.

Both candidates now face a 12-week sprint until the Jan. 31 special election to fill the only current vacancy in Congress. The winner will serve the remainder of Wu's term but will have to quickly turn around and run in May primary and in November as well to win a full two-year term.

1. Thanks for that news!
I was wondering...

Congrats to her, and best of luck in her campaigns over the next year and beyond.

2. You're welcome.
She seems like she's on the ball. Her campaign was the only one that contacted me by phone. I think she'll be able to hit the ground running against Cornilles.

5. I think she was spending more money...
I also got tons of flyers in the mail from her campaign as well too, and not as much from the other candidates.

I think she'll be a decent candidate, and it will be good to get a woman in Oregon's congressional delegation too. I think she will do well for representing us with things like consumer rights, etc.

My biggest concern is that she doesn't back off of going after bad "free trade" deals, etc. and will look at options like tariffs which we sorely need to bring back jobs. I told that to her rep that called me after I'd already voted for Brad A., and explained that if she wasn't nebulous on that issue, I very likely could have voted for her instead.

We need to ALL push her big time that we need to renegotiate NAFTA and all of these other "free trade" deals, and look strongly at tariffs, etc. to protect American jobs here. She might feel like she has to play to the middle to get elected, and also be soft on these issues not to upset Intel and Nike in our district, but we need to push her on how she needs to be part of a new breed of congress that is stronger and more firm on core Democratic Party values, and not surrender to the lobbyists and be in the "center" when that really is just code for being "corporatist" these days.

3. i didn't see that coming, until about two days ago
driving down TV hwy, over by 217 interchange, there was a bunch of folks waving Bonamici signs. None of the other candidates had sign-waving mobs walking the roads -- that was a sign of things to come. I thought for sure it was going to be one of the Brads, but she won handily. Now the real fight begins.

I hope all of us in (or near) CD1 are ready to pitch in and help Suzanne go to DC.

4. She needs to make the point that even if Cornilles portrays himself as a moderate
he is beholden to the extremist loons who run his party, and he will be expected to be their puppet.

I'll send a little cash her way first chance I get. :)

6. I supported Avakian in the primary, but Bonamici suits. She definitely has my support...
in the general. And Cornilles could be a tough challenger this time.

Regardless of who wins this, it's only a 6-month term, then all bets are off for next year.
