MIKE SAKAL, Morning Journal Writer11/27/2005

A whirlwind year is in store for U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Avon, as he kicks off his campaign for one of Ohio's U.S. Senate seats.

Brown, an outspoken critic of President Bush's policies on the war in Iraq and a vociferous voice against the outsourcing of American manufacturing jobs and the high cost of prescription drugs, will begin his drive to the U.S. Senate on Friday, Brown confirmed.

Brown will kick off his campaign with a press conference at 1:30 p.m. in the State Senate's Minority Room at the Statehouse in Columbus in his run to become Ohio's first Democratic U.S. senator since John Glenn retired in 1998...

''I'm ready for this race,'' Brown said. ''I plan to campaign on the failure of the Bush-Taft-Dewine team, on how they failed Ohio in education funding, on jobs, the high cost of energy and prescription drugs. I'm going to go through every part of the state and I'll also talk about what I plan to do. I have ideas, and I plan to talk about them.''...

Congressman will travel across state, stop at UA in bid for DeWine's seat

...In the May primary, he'll face Cincinnati attorney and Iraq War veteran Paul Hackett, who narrowly lost a bid last summer to fill the vacant seat in the 2nd Congressional District...

He said he was excited for the chance to start meeting voters face to face. ``My focus is on building a Democratic base and pointing out the failure of (Gov. Bob) Taft, (President) Bush and DeWine,'' Brown said.

He counts among those failures, education, health care and jobs...

Brown said he's not planning on an ugly campaign with Hackett, and believes he will carry most of the Democratic endorsements from county party chairs, through labor and environmental groups...

Sherrod Brown aiming for Senate

House Democrat hopes to challenge DeWine after facing Paul Hackett in primary

Fifteen years after a defeat that contributed to the Republican takeover of state government, Democrat Sherrod Brown is ready to make another try for statewide elective office.

"I've been fighting clearly on the right side of issues ... on bringing down the cost of prescription drugs, on getting us out of Iraq honorably and quickly and in an orderly fashion, on health care issues, jobs and trade," Brown said in a telephone interview last week...

In 1990, Brown lost a bid for re-election to a third term as Secretary of State to Republican Bob Taft, now Ohio governor. Brown's loss and Republican George Voinovich's defeat of Democrat Anthony J. Celebrezze in that year's governor's race put Republicans in two statewide offices that Democrats had held for eight years.

The victories also gave Republicans control of the State Apportionment Board, which draws state legislative districts. Republicans already controlled the Ohio Senate and in 1994 gained control of the Ohio House as well. They remain in control of both and also hold all statewide non-judicial offices...

4 Democrats may join race for Brown's 13th District seat

...So far, at least four Democrats are seeking the 13th Congres sional District seat or consider ing it.

Tom Sawyer, former Akron mayor and 16-year congressman, said "I'm in it" during a recent interview. Sawyer said that whoever wins the Democratic primary will be the new congressional representative.

Former State Rep. Wayne Jones, chairman of the Summit County Board of Elections, is another Democrat strongly considering a run for the seat. He said Sawyer's entry into the race would not affect his decision.

Capri Cafaro of Youngstown, the wealthy daughter of a mall developer, is another possibility. Spokesman Vic Rubenstein said, "She is actively being encouraged, she is actively considering it, and she is actively talking about it."...

1. I think Brown and Hackett are both worthy, I just hope that who ever
wins the nomination, beats the living political crap out of DeWine, and if results don't, in the least bit(10% margin or less), reflect pre electin/exit polling, then they contest the election. That's all I'm asking!!

3. Agree on that
I have a feeling its going to be a really ugly, dirty, nasty race, though. I think Repukes will pull out all the stops to smear whomever runs against DeWine and they'll probably start during the primary race.

4. I don't think Hackett is qualified
He has scant campaign experience, so him taking the nomination would carry the gargantuan liability that he would foul up and blow it. I don't think he's qualified to be a Senator, either. He is a trial lawyer--that does not qualify him. He is a combat marine/marine reservist. If he had successfully orchestrated the invasion of Normandy I would say otherwise, but he is way out of his league.

7. Well, he'd make a better Senator than DeWine
But then again, so would my cat. So I know what you mean.

Hackett could be very valuable in the future. He needs to start out smaller, such as Ohio state rep. or something.

9. John Edwards was a trial lawyer long before he ran for political office
He's very knowledgable in the legal area, and has served a few years in public office in city council. He knows how the law works and is a quality candidate because he has formerly held public office. The man has a lot of potential and could be a great Senator if given a chance. Keep in mind, EMK served no public office before he was a Senator, but learned from the experience of his family to do well.

I think that practicing lawyers, howeve, are typically qualified to serve public office. As long as they are competent lawyers, they'll probably be competent servants as well.

BROWN TO KICK OFF SENATE RUN WITH FOUR-DAY STATEWIDE TOUR
Published: Sunday, November 27, 2005
NEWS 10A

The Columbus Dispatch
Rep. Sherrod Brown will officially launch his bid for the U.S. Senate on Friday with a four-day statewide tour that kicks off in Columbus.

Among the Democrats appearing with Brown, D-Avon, will be Rep. Ted Strickland, of Lisbon, who is running for governor.

After a 1:30 p.m. Statehouse news conference, Brown will head to Mansfield for a rally on Monday afternoon.

Saturday will bring multiple stops, including Lorain, Toledo and Dayton. On Sunday, Brown will visit the Greater New Light Baptist Church in Cincinnati before moving on to Steubenville, where Strickland is scheduled to appear with him. Monday will bring stops in Akron and other cities.

Brown will challenge Republican Sen. Mike DeWine.

First, Brown must overcome Democratic primary opposition from Paul Hackett, of Cincinnati. The Iraq war veteran narrowly lost to Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Miami Township, in a special election this year. Strickland, a Brown supporter, also faces a Democratic primary challenge in the gubernatorial race: Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman.

Democratic committee airs

ads blasting Republicans

It's a long way to the 2006 midterm elections, but you could forgive Ohioans if they think the 2004 campaign ads never ended.

The latest in an array of early 2006 campaign ads comes courtesy of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which is running radio spots criticizing three Ohio Republican House members for being a "rubber stamp" for Bush administration policies on budget cuts and other issues.

The trio -- Reps. Deborah Pryce, of Upper Arlington; Steve Chabot, of Cincinnati; and Steven C. LaTourette, of Madison -- all hail from only marginally Republican districts, with Pryce's central Ohio district basically a tossup last year between President Bush and Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Pryce hopes the spots aren't "setting the tone for the race, allowing outside money to pour onto our airwaves 12 months before the election," Pryce spokesman Rob Nichols said. Pryce's "constituents, not actors in a DCCC studio, recognize the need to get our books in order."

Of the three only Pryce is facing a major challenger so far: Democrat Mary Jo Kilroy, a Franklin County commissioner.

5. Sherrod Brown: Featured member this week at Democrats.gov
Sherrod Brown has represented the 13th District in Northeast Ohio since 1992. The district includes the cities of Akron, Elyria, and Lorain and integrates Ohio's traditional manufacturing strength and the innovative growing technology and health care industries.

Brown has given Ohioans a voice on health care, trade, jobs, and the War in Iraq and has offered positive alternatives to the Republican leadership's harmful and misguided policies.

As the Ranking Democrat on the Health Subcommittee, Brown has made affordable healthcare for all Americans a top priority. He led the effort in the House to close legal loopholes used by brand-name drug companies to prevent price competition. He fought passage of the 2003 Republican Medicare law and developed an alternative that would have offered seniors a better prescription drug benefit. Senior groups in Ohio have thanked Brown for sponsoring bus trips to Canada that helped them purchase safe, effective prescriptions drugs for up to 80% less than the cost in the United States.

Brown led the bipartisan House fight against the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), which compromises worker and environmental protections at home and abroad. A consistent opponent of Bush Administration tax and trade policies that encourage the exportation of American jobs, Brown has fought for responsible trade agreements that will safeguard our economy and strengthen our global partnerships.

Brown was an early and strong voice in opposition to the war in Iraq, arguing that the President had not answered critical questions before committing U.S. troops. Prior to the invasion of Iraq, Congressman Brown introduced legislation that would have required President Bush to answer those questions and provide a plan to ensure troop safety, a timetable for military involvement, and a plan for withdrawal. Had these questions been considered before the invasion, the American people might be facing a very different reality in Iraq today.

With a strong commitment to social and economic justice and a respected voice on foreign policy issues, Sherrod Brown has been a tireless and effective advocate for policies to make America's working families healthy, safe and successful.
