3. my letter to the editor (Express-Times)
I'll let you know when they publish it.

Dear Editor:
Scott Garrett was one of only eleven members of Congress to vote against the Katrina relief bill (H.R. 3673). Let me say that again: Scott Garrett, our Congressman, voted against helping the victims of the worst natural disaster in American History.
The Right Honorable Representative Garrett, the Earl of Sussex, will vote against anything if it slows down Grover Norquist's plan to "get (our government) down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub". But, I guess Garrett didn't get the memo. Norquist's plan just succeeded.
Try being more compassionate with your conservatism, Scott, and less conservative with your compassion. Whether you want them to or not, some people depend on it.

Sincerely,
Kire

it's a red district and there will be a primary battle

he's pretty slippery, but if the whole Katrina debacle affects the Republicans in '06 like people have been saying, Garrett will be among the first to go (one of the first 11, perhaps)

4. Anne Wolfe's statement
“I am outraged by Scott Garrett’s complete disregard and disrespect for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Yesterday, he was one of only 11 members of Congress to vote against the $51.8 billion in disaster relief that is so desperately needed by the people of the Gulf region. Garrett reasons that FEMA must be accountable – He needs to explain his vote to the people who have lost their homes, lost loved ones and are struggling to survive in the aftermath of the most devastating natural disaster in our nation’s history.

“Just when I thought that the President of the United States and his mother could not be more inhumane, Scott Garrett casts his vote in the worst use of political opportunism that I have ever seen. Garrett has disgraced his constituents in the Fifth Congressional District. He has turned his back on Americans in dire need. Garrett’s inhumanity and extremism do not represent the people of the Fifth District. I hope the voters will remember this vote when they cast their own ballots in 2006.”

IV. New Jersey Republican Votes Against Relief for Victims of Hurricane Katrina

This pretty much says it all…

From Politicsnj.com:

Republican Rep. Scott Garrett was one of eleven Congressmen to vote against aid for New Orleans and other parts of the gulf region damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

“New Jersey families sent Congressman Scott Garrett to Washington to represent their values and compassion in Congress. Today, he has shown that he represents neither,” said Bill Burton, communications director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Americans from every community in the country have selflessly donated millions of dollars to help those who so desperately need food, water and medical attention. When Congress had its chance to support the effort, Congressman Garrett opposed it.” (09/08/05)

Paid for by the New Jersey State Democratic Committee and not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee.
