Southern Nevada, LV & Henderson
Hi all NVians!

We've recently purchased a home in Henderson and will be moving full-time to the area in the coming months (currently serving time in both CA SF East Bay and the LV area).

From what I hear we may be the only Democrats living in our area, so I was just wondering what is the political climate there, what should we look forward to, and what/who should we watch out for?

(and I couldn't think of a better way to get my post count over 200!) B-)

1. Relax, there are plenty of Dems in the Valley.
Turnout for the Dem primary was 10 times higher than ever before. Sen Harry Reid (D) has just been endorsed for reelection by 22 prominent Rs! Yucca Mt is a HUGE issue with all Nevadans and works against bush.

I have my JK sticker on my VW bug. I've seen lots of Kerry stickers and not a single bush sticker in my neighborhood. While there are plenty of Rs around here, they're all in hiding.

I predicted months ago that Kerry will carry Nevada this year. I stand by that statement.

Enjoy Henderson!

2. Thank you!
I was actually in Henderson the weekend of the Dem primary and saw the news coverage and was impressed with the large turnout! That part at least was reassuring.

We were having a Memorial Day cookout at our friends there who invited their friends. Some of the guests were talking about one of their sons who was 20 and was nothing but a bum right now (came in at 4 a.m. that morning.. still living at home). Someone jokingly suggested that they move him to Oregon where he'd feel at home... the Mom laughed and said that was a good idea and thanks to Clinton.. AND Kerry... that Oregon was like that!

A bit about the area we're living, the gym shows only Fox.. and the local restaurants do too. At least at the gym, I can change it to CNN (altho trying to compete $'s with Fox, they're not much better nowadays).

Maybe it's just the crowd I'm associating with at the moment. Can't wait to be there full time and make my own friends... ;)

3. Relax, it's friendly territory
Clark County seems pretty Democratic. Las Vegas is the most unionized city in the nation. Henderson shouldn't be much different than Vegas.

Las Vegas: leans Democratic
Henderson: leans Democratic
North Las Vegas: very Democratic
Boulder City: leans Democratic
The rest of the state: Republican

That Las Vegas newspaper though is run by a bunch of Republican nuts, and one Libertarian, Vin somebody, won't even try to spell his last name. I lived there for a while. Miserable hot in the summer.

4. There _is_ a choice here in LV for newspapers.
The Sun, owned by the Greenspun family. It's an evening paper, takes middle-of-the road to semi-liberal stands, prints a _lot_ of local news items (fairly objective coverage). Brian Greenspun, the editor, still calls himself a Republican but he's a Friend of Bill (Clinton) and carries a lot of NYT columnists like EJ Dionne and Maureen Dowd in the editorial section. It's worth supporting, to keep alive some competition for the extreme RW Review-Journal. And to keep my blood pressure from boiling over when I sit down with the daily newspaper!

5. They were actually roommates in college
They were also Bill's biggest campaign fundraisers in the state.

And, for Just5mins sake, I'd like to point out that Green Valley is named after the Greenspun family, who originally developed it.

7. I remember the Sun
It's a better newspaper but didn't have nearly the circulation that the LVRJ did. I always thought of the Sun as kind of a minor paper and the Review-Journal as the major Vegas paper. But yeah, for a Democrat in Vegas the Sun is the paper to read. I hope they can survive. The LVRJ, to put it nicely, sucks.

8. The Sun deserves Democrats' support so it can survive.
Unfortunately, even most of my Nation discussion group (all liberals or even further left) don't see it that way. They either dis it because of some unacceptable attitude held by Brian Greenspun's father many years ago, or just prefer reading a morning paper with their coffee, period.

for the death of a president.
