Nun sentenced for stealing from Omaha archdiocese
Source: Omaha World Hearld

A Catholic nun was sentenced today to three to five years in prison for stealing money from the Archdiocese of Omaha.

Sister Barbara Markey, 73, former director of the Catholic Family Life Office in Omaha, had pleaded guilty in April to felony theft by deception. Douglas County District Judge Thomas Otepka sentenced her this morning.

Markey is a clinical psychologist who co-wrote one of the Catholic Church’s most widely used marriage-preparation programs, FOCCUS (Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding and Study).

2. Hypocrisy
The Catholic Church has never had problem turning of over clergy to prosecutors for theft of money. However, it refused to do that regarding pedophilia for years. Instead the Church would simply transfer the priest.

6.  Nuns take a vow of poverty
Any money that they earn goes to maintain their convent or the church's missions throughout the world.

4. Something as a Catholic that has always bothered me:
WTF do nuns and priests know about marriage? I wouldn't take sex advice from virgins. I don't take childbirthing tips from men. OK, got that out of my system.

5. Who's the thief here, Sister Markey or the dicocese!?!?
In addition to the original FOCCUS Inventory she co-wrote in 1985, Sister Markey "developed on her own numerous ancillary and supportive materials, videos and training programs and built a small business that distributed millions of dollars worth of materials worldwide," Berry said. "Several million dollars in earnings from these materials and programs have supplemented archdiocesan funds for family life programs and services to parishes and families in the archdiocese and across the United States."

7. There's a priest in Connecticut who embezzled $1M from his parish
Embezzling priest won't report today for 37-month prison term

A day before a Catholic priest convicted of stealing $1 million from his Darien church was to report to prison, a federal judge granted him a third delay.

At about 5:30 p.m. yesterday, U.S. District Court Judge Janet Bond Arterton postponed until Aug. 6 the date the Rev. Michael Jude Fay, former pastor of St. John Roman Catholic Church, begins serving his three-year prison sentence.

Fay, who has prostate cancer, was to surrender today at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C., but made his delay request last week to allow more time for the Bureau of Prisons to determine whether it can administer a new cancer drug to him.

(snip)

Fay was pastor of St. John for 15 years. Prosecutors said he stole $1.3 million from his Darien parish from 1999 to 2006, funneling much of it into secret bank accounts. Fay admitted stealing but said the amount was $400,000 to $1 million, because he used some of the money to buy gifts for church employees and volunteers.

Records obtained by The Advocate show Fay used a church credit card to purchase designer clothing, Cartier jewelry, limousine rides and Ethan Allen furniture.

Many of the purchases were made in New York City, Philadelphia - where his event planner boyfriend, Clifford Fantini, lives - and Florida, where the couple owned a condominium. In December 2006, Fay turned over his share in the Fort Lauderdale condominium to his former parish, but the church has not sold the property because Fantini still owns half.
