Demos' Dean set for talk

HELENA - Howard Dean, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a 2004 presidential candidate, will speak at the Montana Democratic Party's State Officers Convention in Great Falls on July 16.

In 2004, he was the early frontrunner in the Democratic Party's presidential race, generating widespread enthusiasm, but ultimately Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts won the nomination.

Dean then founded Democracy for America to build on his groundswell of support and the wave of new energy sweeping the party, his official biography on the party's Web site says.

Dean is coming to Montana at the invitation of Montana Democratic Chairman Bob Ream, who asked him when the Democratic National Committee elected Dean. Ream said Dean is trying to visit all 50 states as national chairman.

"It's our officers' convention and the big one, and he's impressed with what we did in Montana," Ream said. "He thinks we're an example of what you can do in a red state with the right organization."

I called the state party today about Dean's visit.

He'll be available at a cocktail party saturday afternoon-evening that's for people who pay full price for the convention ($100/person). His speach though is at dinner at 630, and has to leave right away, no question and answers :-(

I don't think I'm gonna head out there unfortunately, too long a drive and too short on cash.
