They're baaaaack and they think they can still ban stem cell research
Cloning fight launched
Two legislators say they want people to have a clear choice. Others call the plan a slap in the face to voters.
By KIT WAGAR
The Star’s Jefferson City correspondent

Surrounded by boisterous supporters, state Sen. Matt Bartle and Rep. Jim Lembke unveiled their proposal Tuesday to reverse last month’s public vote to protect stem-cell research in Missouri.

The two Republican lawmakers said their 46-word amendment would give Missouri voters an unambiguous choice on whether to ban human cloning.

The Nov. 7 vote, they said, showed that Missourians support such a ban. But the initiative’s deceptive wording actually allows humans to be cloned, they said.

“In an open and fair debate, I believe we will prevail,” Bartle said. “You shouldn’t need a law degree to understand what you’re voting on.”

more . . . (they are calling this democracy!)

1. Dear Jesus, I don't ask you for much but
Matt Bartle is way overdue for the rapture. And he's been a really good boy. I would write to Santa but he is kinda busy this weekend.

Please rapture Matt.

Love,
proud :)

2. Friggin' idiots.
Even baby blunt supports Amendment 2, according to the article.
And considering how greedy these guys are, I'm amazed they aren't instead busy figuring out how to scam money from the growth of stem cell research in Missouri.

4. I was listening to Christmas music this week on a "christian"
station. Anyway, the spin is that the voters were fooled and didn't know what they were voting for and that the vote should be overturned or redone. Expect to hear that one some more after a little polishing.

5. They claim the amendment does not ban human cloning
I am not sure which part of "NO HUMAN CLONING" they don't comprehend.

6. Last I checked
human cloning was banned federally.

Why the fuck are they even worried about it?

7. I was told my daughters would grow up to prostitute themselves for their eggs.
Such wonderful people these "right-to-lifers" are.

8. I was in Memphis this past week and read a great LTTE
on that very topic. It was from an anesthesiologist who said he had been present at hundreds of egg harvests and they are not painful, there are no after effects and the fundies are just blowing that whole thing way out of proportion.

It is great to see so many people talking back to these talibornagains. I am beyond disgusted with them. If they are so concerned about egg harvesting, then they don't have to donate any of their eggs. (The gene pool is healthier without them anyway!) And no one is forcing them to benefit from stem cell research either.

I want one of those bumper stickers:

AGAINST ABORTION?
DON'T HAVE ONE

9. According to census data, the largest rate of abortions in this country...
are from white, Christians from the SOUTH!

Followed closely in 2nd with white, Christians from the MIDWEST!

They need to practice what they preach. Empty-lived motherfuckers.

11. I have to admit
that a LTTE in the KC Star caused me to think. It basically said that we're being disingenuous to think the Stowers would not be remounting a campaign to bring the issue back to the voters if the amendment had not passed.

Anybody else in the Bartle district? There was a great effort to defeat him in the primary election. I even voted a (gulp!) Republican ballot, but it was obviously to no avail. He ran what the KC Star called a "stealth" campaign.

12. Welcome to DU!
:hi:

For me, it is about saving lives. My dad died of Parkinson's. I want to see a cure in my lifetime. If that means Stowers wants to look for funding, tell me where to send the check. And yes, I would gladly vote to spend my tax dollars on stem cell research.

13. Oh, absolutely,
I passionately support the stem cell issue! Like you and so many others, I have family members who could possibly benefit from the research. I am worried that the margin of victory (2%?) is small enough that Bartle and his cronies could overturn it.

It infuriates me that Bartle won here in Jackson county. As I understand it, he mainly targeted the conservative churches.

Thanks for the welcome! I've been coming to DU for inspiration for several years and finally made the plunge!!

14. If you are free this evening,
we are having a progressive party at The Flea Market in Westport. Right after the Chiefs game - around 6:30.

Most of the KC DU crowd will be there as well as lots of other candidates and great liberally minded people. I can guarantee you that no Matt Bartle fans or clones will be in attendance.

So come join us in the party room at The Flea Market if you can. :hi:

Just kidding, heh, heh. :D Thank you for the kind invite, but my husband and I are going to some kind of "do." I plan to stay much more informed through this website though, so maybe I can make the next one!
