I recall a sermon I heard about 25 years ago in New Haven, in which the priest compared a balanced life to riding a bicycle. If you feel yourself veering in one direction, the worst thing you can do is try to lean sharply in the other direction, because you'll fall for sure. When rounding corners and the like, you actually have to lean just enough in the direction that you're afraid of, i.e. accept youself as you are, although leaning too far will also lead to a fall.

I like that analogy. It seems that the theocons are full of self-hatred for whatever impulses they have, so they go off in the opposite direction and condemn what they most hate in themselves. It is particularly convincing to me that they all declare that homosexuality is a CHOICE.

Well, just how do they know that? My theory is that they're bisexuals who actually HAVE chosen to suppress one side of their personality. Therefore, for them, their surface heterosexuality was indeed a choice. But the homoerotic impulses are still there, so they try to bat them down by condemning the out gay people they see around them.

As far as pedophilia is concerned, they probably have some far-fetched rationalization for why it's okay for THEM to molest children while it's bad for others to do.
