Recently moved "out to the country" -- at least by my city-born standards. :D Lancaster, just outside I-495. Maybe it's not news to anyone else, but this is the first time in my life I've ever seen a black squirrel. Kinda cool!

7. We have them by the dozens in my town
The story goes that one of our local residents trapped black squirrels in Canada and released them into our eastern Ohio city. Apparently they loved it here. We now have more black than red or grey ones.

8. Black Squirrel as Sign of Hope
Maybe it's a sign. Not to give up hope. That our Democratic Party operatives are working hard behind the scenes to make things happen before inauguration.....Ahhh.. Maybe not.

9. Cool! Thanks for all your replies!
I had no idea there was such a thing, outside of Mirkwood in Middle Earth. :) Turns out, it's not such a rare thing here in Massachusetts, either.

The well-established colony of black-phase gray squirrels at the Stanley Park preserve in Westfield, Massachusetts, is thought to have descended from a pair of black-phase gray squirrels that were brought there from Michigan and released in 1948. It is likely that the melanistic squirrels seen in the Amherst, Southwick, and Springfield areas are related to the Westfield squirrels. Most people are so accustomed to the presence of gray squirrels that they barely notice them. It is startling to sight the uncommon form, the black-phase gray squirrel, and that awakens interest in the suburban wildlife around us.

10. Seen them in Black Forest, CO
They are fuzzier and have longer ears. The grey ones are overrunning them though.

11. We've got grey, black and white albinos in my neighborhood.
Lots of woods nearby, so I don't think inbreeding explains all the albinos. They're pretty cool.

13. A Coyote ran by me while I was raking the other day
Just over the border in RI..

He had a staring contest with the cat across the way and then ran off into the woods.

What a nasty looking little guy that coyote was.

17. Ebert's Squirrel
Black squirrels that live mostly in colder climates or at higher altitudes.

They are known for their black coats, and tufted ears.

I've also seen black foxes, they're pretty cool too.

18. When I live in Amherst I saw them often
I would joke with friends at UMass about how the squirrels segregated themselves to different part of campus. Around Soutwest and campus center most of them were grey but I'd see most of the black and red ones when visiting friends in Orchard Hill.

19. there's at least a family of them in Wilmington MA
my son recently moved from there, but he lived near a small canal close to powerlines - his landlord had ducks, geese, and chickens so while not completely rural, they were a little isolated from the neighborhood...

he pointed out to me that even in that neighborhood, there were indeed several black squirrels

20. Strange!
Recently, as I was driving home through Maynard, a black squirrel darted out in front of my car.

Never, ever had I seen one. At first I thought it was a cat, but it definitely was a squirrel.

22. That's funny you'd say that
because my mom saw one a couple of days ago. She was driving home from work and it ran across the road in front of her.

Probably intelligence devices created by the Pentagon to spy on those "libruls" from Massachusetts.

How interesting! I would've though it was a very small cat, but after that response about moscow I suppose it's not.
Edit: They may have migrated from Maryland.

24. I've seen red squirrels
down in the pioneer valley.

Holyoke/ Owbow regions.

Scrawny little things to compared to the massive buggers we got around here by the NH border.

Just thought you might like to know.
