Stephen King, John Grisham, Tess Gerritsen for Tom Allen
BEST-SELLING AUTHORS STEPHEN KING,

JOHN GRISHAM AND TESS GERRITSEN

HEADLINE FUNDRAISER FOR TOM ALLEN

Best-selling authors Stephen King, John Grisham and Tess Gerritsen will headline a special fundraising event for the U.S. Senate campaign of Congressman Tom Allen in Bangor on Saturday, June 7.

The authors will each do a reading from their recent works and talk about the importance of Allen’s candidacy for the Senate. King is a resident of Bangor. Gerritsen resides in Camden.

“I don’t often get involved in politics, but I believe there is a great deal at stake in this year’s election,” King said. “Tess, John and I believe that we need change in America. What has happened to our country in the last eight years is downright scary – and believe me, I know scary.”

Allen’s vote against the war in Iraq, his support for the middle class, energy independence and affordable health care are all reasons King supports his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. “Electing Tom Allen to the U.S. Senate is an important step towards change for our country, and we are proud to support him,” he said.

General admission tickets are $25 for the 7 p.m. event at Bangor Auditorium, Bass Park Complex, located at 100 Dutton St. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Proceeds Benefit the Tom Allen for Senate campaign and are not tax deductible.

For more information, contact the Allen for Senate campaign at 207-774-9696 or visit the campaign web site at www.tomallen.org.

1. Elect Tom Allen.
There is no one who would serve Maines electorate more conscientiously than Tom Allen,
he is a fine man who does not shy from doing the right thing.

2. been saying that for years

I personally like what Allen has had to say from the git-go about Iraq. I also think from a "MAINERS" point of view SEN.COLLINS and SEN. SNOWE have served long enough. From the financial side they have voted against the middle class. the BUShCO group allowed high interest rates on credit cards, changes in bankruptcy laws and other financial reliefs that put our middle class workers at risk.
ITS TIME WE BROUGHT NEW IDEAS INTO OUR SYSTEM;AND TOM DOES THIS WELL.

TOP TEN SENATORS(TIMES MAGAZINE)

it was a pleasure to see sen. snow getting recognition for her out standing work.although she is a republican, she represents" maine" well.
i was appalled to see a mean spirited post in another forum; thank god the author and the forum represent only a minor portion of the populace of maine(less than 5%).
Sen.Snow has always defended the views of our state regardess of who was in the "whitehouse". which upsets a few in her own party(less than 5%) who follow blindly right or wrong.
Kudos to the lady sen from "MAINE" we love you!

What do you mean by "she won't support the war"? She voted for it.

"I was against this war from the beginning, and I believe we must set a safe and responsible deadline for withdrawal of our troops. If we are going to change the direction of our country, we first must change our policy in Iraq."--Tom Allen, 4/28/2008

7. My "other handle?" You may call me, King Arthur, while you...
seem supremely suited for the role of Black Knight.

The Black Knight is a fictional character in the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. As his name suggests, he is a black knight who guards a tiny bridge for unknown reasons. He suffers from unchecked overconfidence and a staunch refusal to ever give up.

When Arthur moves to cross the bridge; he refuses to stand aside. Reluctantly, Arthur fights the Black Knight, and after a short battle the Knight's left arm is severed.

However, even at this the Knight refuses to stand aside, insisting "'tis but a scratch" and fighting on. Next his right arm, which had been holding his sword, is also removed, but he still does not concede. As the Knight is literally disarmed, Arthur assumes the fight is over and kneels to offer a prayer to God. The Black Knight interrupts Arthur's prayer of thanks for his victory by kicking him in the side of the head and accusing him of cowardice; when Arthur points out his injuries he insists it's "just a flesh wound". In response to the continued kicks and insults, Arthur chops off first one leg and finally the other, at which the Black Knight then concedes to "call it a draw". Arthur rides away,
leaving the Black Knight to scream threats at him ("I'LL BITE YOUR LEGS OFF!")

8. Ignorance wins, for the moment. Event postponed.
Maine fundraiser postponed after King's remarks on military

May 12, 2008

PORTLAND, Maine—A Bangor fundraiser featuring three best-selling novelists for Senate candidate Tom Allen has been postponed in the aftermath of a controversy surrounding Stephen King's remarks about literacy and the military.

King, who was scheduled to appear June 7 with John Grisham and Tess Gerritsen, expressed fear Monday that what was meant to be a literary event could have become all too political.
<>
In a statement relayed Monday by the Allen campaign, King said he doesn't want to be a distraction. Said King: "Since that might be the case now, it's best to do this event later, but it's just too good not to do it at all."

9. King guilty...
of UNDERSTATING reality!

The dumbest Generation
by Mark Bauerlein, Emory University professor.

<>
"Mind(less) Games

The technology that was supposed to make young adults more astute, diversify their tastes, and improve their minds had the opposite effect.
According to recent reports from government agencies, foundations, survey firms, and scholarly institutions,
MOST YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES NEITHER READ LITERATURE (OR FULLY KNOW HOW), work reliably (just ask employers), visit cultural institutions (of any sort), nor vote
(MOST CAN'T EVEN UNDERSTAND A SIMPLE BALLOT). They cannot explain basic scientific methods, recount foundations of American history, or name any of their local political representatives. What do they happen to excel at is – each other. They spend unbelievable amounts of time electronically passing stories, pictures, tunes, and texts back and forth, savoring the thrill of peer attention and dwelling in a world of puerile banter and coarse images.
The Not So Greatest Generation
Anyone who thinks this is mere intergenerational grousing, the time-worn tradition of an older generation wagging its finger at a younger one, should think again.

Drawing upon exhaustive research, detailed portraits, and historical and social analysis, The Dumbest Generation presents an uncompromisingly realistic study of the young American mind at this critical juncture. The book also lays out a compelling vision of how we might address its deficiencies.

To fail to do so may well mean sacrificing our future to the least curious and intellectual generation in national history."

10. It's a sad comment when...
our evil twin must be mined to breath some life into this place.

"Spare me the self righteous indignation will ya. I'm going to chime in.
I grew up on military baaes my whole life. My Dad spent 31 years in the AF and I spent 8 years in the Army. My grandfather was in WWII. Heck even my wife is a military brat and grew up on Army bases all over.
The cold, sad, hard truth of the matter is that a disproportionate number of our military people ain't too bright. It's just a fact of life. This doesn't mean that there aren't all kinds of super intelligent people serving in our Armed Forces because there are. It just means that speaking from personal experience there are definitely a whole bunch of semi literate, not too smart, mouth breathers too, more than I feel you find per capita in the general population.
This is not a knock on them per se. What they do is admirable and trying to better yourself by spending time in the service is a good thing. You learn a skill, you learn responsibility, teamwork and serve your country and usually come out as a better person that when you went in.
Still, this is not excusing what Stephen King said (which is really more about HOW he said it).
But please people stop acting as if our military is populated with all of our best and brightest 'cause it just isn't true. They may be the best in the sense that they have chosen to serve our country but in the smarts department, not so much."

11. ignorance comes in all forms

many use words as swords and do little to maintain the status quo. Though the pen may be sharp it builds naught. King has done much good with his wealth. especially for the youth of Maine. I especially thank him for this.
governor Kings computer program has also done more good than harm. many oppose it for political reasons, others because it threatens them. Literature by itself has never contributed to mankind what science or math skills have. It is simply a tool which is nice to have. many of us have served in the military. but that is not the only way to protect.
while WAS PRACTICING IGNORANCE freezing my butt off building Dow,Loring,Presque Isle,Pease, Brunswick bases you were probably reading mary had a little lamb. when you last made a trip using I-95 you crossed some of my labor. how about the airline? the hogan road, the maine mall the turnpike was you in fantasy land reading keating?
I pray every day that my grand kids will get to experience half the joys of life I have.
oh by the way did I mention on my path to ignorance maggie gave a big hug and gov. Reed
a letter of thanks? oh and so did gov. Brennan and ah the sect. of the navy and ah lets see for the fall out shelter survey our company received an award. and for the aerial survey program , aw gee I don't want to bore you with my ignorance your life is so much better! is it fowl or fool mig is so much easier ha ha
