WE NEED YOUR HELP TODAY to defeat anti-choice House Bill 242 by Representative Crowe R-Slidell). This bill would require mandatory professional counseling for any woman seeking an abortion. Simply click "TAKE ACTION" and the following letter will automatically be faxed on your behalf to targeted
legislators.

If you live in the Baton Rouge area, PLEASE COME to the House Health & Welfare Committee hearing tomorrow, Tuesday, May 24 at 9:00 a.m. in room 5 of the Capitol. We will meet in the Capitol cafeteria on the first floor at 8:45 a.m. If you would like more information please email [email protected] or call

"Please oppose Representative Crowe's House Bill 242 that would require mandatory professional counseling for any woman seeking an abortion. The bill is scheduled in the House Health and Welfare Committee on May 24.

Women take unintended pregnancies seriously. Most women seek counseling from their family members, friends, or clergy before deciding to have an abortion. In addition, Louisiana law already requires that women receive state-mandated counseling and then wait at least 24 hours to be eligible to have an abortion (40:1299.35.6).

This bill does nothing to help Louisiana women and their families. It creates another unfunded mandate for the Department of Health & Hospitals and additional barriers for women, including rape victims, to exercise their constitutional right to make private, reproductive decisions. We should focus our efforts on legislation to fund sex education to prevent both sexually transmitted diseases as well as unintended pregnancies.

Please oppose House Bill 242. Thank you for your consideration."
