Vote drains alcohol from stores

Buechel merchant says future uncertain

The Courier-Journal

Jay Patel and his family bought the BP Station at 4213 Bardstown Road in Buechel last December with the hopes of prospering and eventually buying more stores.

But a ban on alcohol sales that voters approved this week will stop him from selling beer and will threaten his plans, he said.

Some eligible voters didn't cast ballots because they didn't take the issue seriously. Sean O'Connell, Slimick's boyfriend, said he didn't vote because he didn't know anyone who supported the ban and didn't think it had a chance to pass.

"Everybody I talked to thought it was a silly, ridiculous idea," O'Connell said. "We just thought it was a joke."

------------------------------

Sean O'connell is a prime example of what is wrong with America today.

People don't think that their vote will make a difference, so they don't vote.

People don't pay attention to issues, so they don't vote.

People think things are a "silly, ridiculous idea", so they don't vote.

People think that those in charge will take care of things, so they don't vote.

I had a Political Science professor ask us one day what the most dangerous thing to democracy was. I replied with "Republicans", which I still believe, but his answer is spot on also. Uninformed voters. Until people realize what all us here know, all issues affect all people, the minority will continue to push their agendas down our collective throats and push us closer and closer to tyrannical society.

1. That's what you get

when you ignore the presence of Church Ladies in your midst. Oh sure, just go about your sinful business and pat yourself on the back for not having to listen to them, the hectoring old biddies, or even notice that they're all around you, statistically surviving their husbands by 20 years, and in their hornrimmed boredom searcing for other people's lives to run. Yes, do have another drink, another toke, and maybe some cheap sex too if all the substances you abuse still allow you to get it up. Rot your brain as quick as you can, Mr. Drinkin' Man--Church Ladies aren't standing in your way. Make yourself slow and stupid with drink and drugs and forget that they're there whispering about something in the corner. Don't notice that they've proposed a ban on alcohol sales as a referendum item in the next local elections. They wouldn't want to distract you from your nonstop partying by telling you who's behind it. "That thing won't pass," you can rest assured, since no one that you would know would be for it. Just tell yourself not to worry or even to bother voting on the issue--the sooner you're done filling out the ballot and voting, the sooner you can go back to the bottle and your 20 dollar floozy for the evening. Besides you had a terrible wait in line to vote standing behind that group of ladies from the church with their Sunday hats and dresses and purses. Your eyes sting and your hands are shaking. Yes, that's right, finish voting quickly, quickly, quickly. Church Ladies will put your completed ballot in the box for you and smile as you stagger out the door.

Next time it will be latex prophylactics!
