Greetings from Polk County.
Debi asked that I post information from the Des Moines area on this forum...so here goes.

I live in West Des Moines my property isn't in any danger. In fact, it is hard to believe that I live in the same metropolitan area that was affected when the levee broke. But the flooding in Des Moines did come very close to my office. We were asked to evacuate yesterday and our back parking lot was like a lake. Volunteers put up 13,000 sandbags. We moved all of our copiers, printers, etc. to the 2nd floor just in case the water levels rose.

The area that is most affected right now is on the north side of Des Moines. It is an older area of the city and is considered a lower income area. I feel OK saying this because it is also the area that I came from. My 'hood! In fact, the high school I graduated from North High School, is surrounded by water. It is unfortunate that those who can least afford to be in this situation are the ones most affected by it.

Funny....by having the levee break, the water level in the river has gone down and might actually prevent further level breaks down river.

I wish I had some pictures to post but I'm trying to stay away and let the authorities handle the situation without the stress of handling the gawkers.

If I hear more, I'll let you know.

1. Glad you're ok, Inspired...
Sending you postive thoughts from Ankeny!

We're ok here. I feel sort of a guilty-weird feeling. It was a beautiful day
today, sunny and warm. However, outside my doors there is so much mayhem, in Des
Moines, CR and Iowa City. It's a strange feeling to be so close to such disaster, but
to be removed from it.

Stay dry and safe.

2. I know what you mean
The part of Coralville where I am located is high and dry. We have water, electricity, and the sewers aren't backing up. Such a different story in many other places that are very close by. I have friends and relatives who are out of their homes and have probably lost everything. It's very sad.
