This week's Peace/Justice Feature focuses on:
1) a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 7 pm at the Abbey, 825 N Penn, to continue planning counter-inaugural activities for Thurs. Jan. 20, 11:30-1, spearheaded by Indianapolis Peace and Justice Center.
2) Seventh Annual King Holiday Celebration on Friday Jan. 14, 4-6 pm, at Martin Luther King Center, 40 W. 40th St. The theme is "Higher Learning," and the speaker is Rozelle Boyd, president of the City-County Council. For more info, phone the center at 923-4581.
3) Our Beloved Community Festival, celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Saturday, Jan. 15, 11-3 indoors at Christian Theological Seminary, 1000 W. 42nd St., sponsored by Peace Learning Center in partnership with the Indianapolis Museum of Art and Christian Theological Seminary. Each year about 500 people gather for a public ceremony and community activities. This year's highlight will include a tribute to Robert Kennedy who spoke in CTS' Auditorium the night MLK was assassinated and later that night gave the best speech of his life at 17th and Broadway. Carl Westmoreland from Cincinnati's new Freedom Center - National Underground Railroad Museum will be the keynote speaker. For details on activities, see below. Washington Street, presented by Indiana Project Safe Neighborhoods and sponsored by Westside Community Ministries, Inc., Christamore House Family & Community Center, USA, National City Bank, INHP, Indianapolis Housing Agency & MCHD. Breakfast Served: 8:00-9:00 a.m. (to the first 800). Activities at Our Beloved Community Festival
Engage in dialogues about justice and art, immerse yourself in music, film, spoken word, and art making activities to celebrate Dr. King's vision of a diverse and respectful community for everyone.
Activities are being developed for all ages, but especially to help children understand the messages of Dr. King and how that legacy can be alive in their own lives and their community. Activities include:
