I first met him back in 1970 at Thillens Stadium...he was a Producer for WIND and then took over the all night show. I used to chat with him over those years and he shared some very valuable pearls of wisdom about radio and his own experience. I lost contact with him, but still kept an eye on his career over the 80's and 90's...and then re-connected with him about 10 years ago. He was suffering from emphezema...one of many illnesses he had to battle in his last years. While his body was breaking down, his spirit was strong. He was forced into radio retirement since no company wanted to assume his insurance, so he free-lanced and wrote for local papers. Despite set backs that many of us feared would be his last, he came roaring back. Sadly, he lost the battle this time.
Truth be known...even at his height, there wasn't that much glory or fame to who Ed was or what he did. He always lived modestly in a North Side apartment and his weight was a constant battle. No matter, his riches were in the people he befriended and the many he reached out to. His riches were riding with a fire squadron (he was certified in CPR) or donating money and time to various charities. In the end, one can't take the bank account, but one sure can take the satisfaction of knowing you've done good. Rest well, Eddie...
