Bush to speak to Topinka supporters on Illinois visit
Bush to speak to Topinka supporters on Illinois visit

Associated Press
Published July 5, 2006, 6:29 PM CDT

CHICAGO -- President Bush is expected to stump for Republican gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka and tout his plan to boost the competitiveness of U.S. industry during a two-day visit to Illinois.

Bush's visit, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, also will include dinner with Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and the presentation of an award to a volunteer from the northern Illinois village of Lindenhurst, the White House said.

Bush is scheduled to speak at a reception hosted by Citizens for Judy Baar Topinka, the state treasurer's campaign organization.

He also plans to talk about the American Competitiveness Initiative, according to the White House. The program, which Bush announced during his State of the Union address in January, would double government funding for basic research in the physical sciences, train thousands of new science and math teachers and extend a popular tax credit businesses can receive for investing in research and development.

President Bush in Chicago for Topinka Fundraiser
This Friday, President George Bush will be in town to host a fundraiser for Judy Baar Topinka. Let's tell the President, and Karl Rove's pick for Governor, Topinka, that the GOP has taken America in the wrong direction. We need your help to send a loud message, please join us this Friday from 11 AM to 1 PM.

4. I think Bush sort of helped Gov. B this morning.
Here is a snippet from the transcript.
"In the Chicago area, businesses have added over -- more than 74,000 new jobs over the past two years.

BUSH: And that's positive. It's a good sign.

Unemployment rate in this area is 4.3 percent. That's below the national average. People are working. People are able to find jobs.

Illinois created more jobs than any other state in the month of April. The entrepreneurial spirit is strong here."

After I just copied and pasted that, I started having trouble with copying and pasting the Washington Post link where I found it. So, you'll have to do a search on it yourself to find more. But, that was the main part that I wanted to show you.

6. Yes and Rod JUMPED all over it!

The governor said he wants to thank Bush for mentioning Illinois' record in job creation in a speech Friday.

Last month, GOP candidate Judy Baar Topinka questioned the numbers when the governor released figures showing Illinois leading the nation in monthly job growth.

Blagojevich said he wants to thank the president for agreeing with him and disagreeing with Topinka.
