Is it now legal to ask a voter for ID in Illinois?
My wife reports she was asked for ID and told that she had to show ID.

I voted at the same place and was NOT asked for ID.

What's the deal?

4. Always A Formality
Today was my son's first election, and even though the judge knew who he was they still wanted a DL to verify the signature on his voters registration. I ask what they would do if he didn't have a DL and they said any type of ID with a signature (library card) would do.

Reminds me of the "good old days"...one year I came in early to vote...the old judge (Repugnican) looked me up and down and wanted two IDs...finally after I had proven I was who I was, he pulls out my registration and sees my wife's right behind mine. The judge then asks "will your sister be in to vote later". I look at him and said "of course, and she's bringing our child".

2. I was not asked either
And even when I presented my card, they still didn't pay attention. How silly that officials are so inconsistent. There is no legal requirement as far as I know.

3. Under certain circumstances it is mandatory.
If you have submitted a new "motor voter" registration application since the last time you voted, and did not provide either a drivers license number or social security number on the form, you are supposed to be asked to provide identification the next time you try to vote.

If your registration status is challenged by a pollwatcher, you can be required to provide two forms of identification showing current residence.

Also, if you have moved out of your precinct within the 30 days prior to the election, you can still vote in your old precinct after swearing an affidavit and providing two forms of id.

Finally, if a voter is not personally known to an election judge, they have some limited discretion to request reasonable proof of identity.

5. Two other circumstances:
If the initial registration was done online 2 forms of ID are required the first time you vote (one has to be a picture ID) OR

If the signature of record differs greatly from the signature you provide on your application to vote an ID may be requested to verify identity.
