Should I make my own signs?
Or will the many groups that are protesting going to have signs available. I'm just bringing a backpack so I'm concerned about crushability. OTOH, if you ever get to see the back of my car, you'll know I just can't stand to have people be in the dark about my political point of view. ;)

1. Singularity=authenticity. I hate seeing a bunch of dupe signs.
Make sure they are readable though. NATION BUILDING BEGINS AT HOME is still my favorite slogan, these days.

3. Agreed. Make you own signs. It looks more thoughtful. And...
make a few spares to give away on the metro ride there.

11. I'm considering
How many more people are you planning on murdering, George Bush?

Or,

George Bush
How many people are you planning to kill today?

2. Make your own.
Save the signs for people who are flying in and might not be able to take their own signs with them to DC!

Also, sign making is fun (imho), and having a handmade sign usually stands out better in a crowd than the standard pre-printed ones.

15. I'll be driving up and can bring extra posterboard and markers
We can hook up and you can make your own sign. This will give you a chance to make your own sign and be as expressive as you want to be.

I've narrowed my choices down to two:

*Bush is a giggling murderer.
*Impeach. Indict. Imprison.

Maybe I'll just make a double-sided sign!!

19. Florida Contingent Has Been Told To Remain PEACEFUL!
So I'm thinking of making a sign that says "My Opinion PEACE" as a take off on a media type theme! Considering we get so little coverage!

But I'm flying in and don't know where to get poster paper. I will bring stencils with me, but hope to find a place to get the paper. Can't use ANYTHING heavy or ANYTHING that MAY be considered a WEAPON!

7. Do you have any pics of your car? I'd love to see them!
Here's a link to mine from last year. I'm working on getting a new collection this year.

(The slideshow cuts them off, so don't view that way.)

9. Bring an assorment of markers. Also either poster board or cardboard.
foam 'sandwich' poster board is light and durable. A flattened cardboard box can be bigger and more environmentally correct. Having markers allows others to make their own on the fly.

Practical note: wooden sticks are a no-no. They are usually not allowed by the police. Some people use cardboard tubes to hold up their sign, others just hold the sign without a handle.

Also, an old sheet, some markers and some creative friends can make a great banner.

Let a million images bloom!

18. Portable signage idea here!
I made mine out of those nylon collapsible sun shades...the kind you get for the front window of your car.

Acrylic paint works fine & won't crack.

They "collapse" to about the size of a small dinner plate. Cheaper than foamboard, too (at least mine were). They expand to almost posterboard size.

Tuck a few in your backpack!

GEORGIE PORGIE PUDDIN'N'PIE
HOW MANY AMERICANS HAVE YOU LET DIE ?

Figure that just about covers 9-11, Iraq and Katrina.

*****

For my sign:

FIGHTING FOR DEMOCRACY "THERE"
LOSING DEMOCRACY "HERE"

22. My sign is likely going to be:
"PEACE IS PATRIOTIC" (possibly with a flag design)

Simple, non-agitating, and it offsets all of those whackjobs who think you have to support the war to be patriotic.

http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/
Enter an image file. Tell it how large you want it to be and the paper size you will be printing to and it will generate a PDF file that you can paste together.

30. There will be signs handed out, but they are more fun to make.
Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 11:51 AM by brainshrub
While I always pack light, it's fun to have a hand-made sign.

Remember: Simple messages are more likely to get read.

"Bush + Cheney = Axis of Weasels"

Is better than:

"Bush is a evil man who should not be trusted with the reigns of government. His lies about the Iraqi war and total mismanagement of the disaster in New Orleans shows that he, and his administration, are a pack of weasels."

Keep in mind I have no artistic abilities whatsoever, so I used stencils for the letters, fabric for the "flags", and stickers for the stars.

34. I'm flying in on Sat morning. So, I made a t-shirt.
Here goes -- this is centered on the back; all in black, except the war line:

Majority
Mainstream
Mom

I work. I pay taxes.
I listen. I watch.
I learn. I vote.
I am against war.

And I teach my children
those values.
