Recruiters set to collect isle students’ data
Recruiters set to collect isle students’ data

Don't be surprised if your high school junior or senior gets a call at home from a military recruiter, even if your phone number is unlisted.

Unless you have stopped by your school office to fill out an "opt-out" form, contact information for teenagers in public schools is being collected this month to be turned over to U.S. military recruiters in October.

A little-known provision of the No Child Left Behind Act allows the military to request the names, addresses and phone numbers of secondary students in schools that receive public funds. The Hawaii Department of Education is gathering information on students as young as sixth grade.

"In the past, the Interservice Recruitment Council has asked only for grades 11 and 12," said Greg Knudsen, spokesman for the Department of Education. "Last year, they did ask for grade 10 for the first time."

1. i emailed them

told them the law should include the private christian academies and non public schools. I went to one of those fundie services at one of those churches w/ a christian academy attached and those parents should jump at the chance to sacrifice their kids on the altar of *.

let's see if they print my letter, all my friends and relatives in HI will hate me.

force the private schools to turn over private info. Hence the provision "all schools that receive federal funds" in the law. Many of the "elite" private schools all have millions tied up in endowments that allows them to run the school free from aid.

I went to private school in NYC and the school never gave out our information to anyone, military or universities. The only way a student's information was to be given out is if it was requested by a school and the student signed a release. I don't ever recall seeing a recruiter at the school as well.

I guess the military thought that because parents were paying $28,000 a year for their child to attend this school, to recruit there would be wasting their time and effort.

hoping that the patriots in those christian academies in Hawaii would encourage their kids to enlist.

also it was a swipe at my many bushbot friends/relatives over there who go silent when i suggest their kids enlist.

edited to add last sentence.

2. Great info Quetzal ...
Not many people have brought this info to light ...

What's more interesting is that, indeed, most parents don't even know that their children are being targeted by the war machine!

There are a lot of great organization here in Hawai'i that are going into the schools to offer different alternatives to the Military to the students. I have volunteered by services to one of these organizations and would love to see more people do the same.

Call the schools!
OPT-OUT!
Don't let your kid end up suffering in Iraq like I did!

Continue to check back in on DU-Hawai'i for future info about my being part of a "Alternatives to the Military" taping by Oleo in October.

Mahalo!!
