a Democrat who spoke at our local meeting..
Democrats were meeting tonight in a small town in north Georgia, when a special person came to speak. He had been active in politics for several decades, and met every President since FDR..with the exception of Ronald Reagan.

Most of his comments were directed at making new members more active and to lay out his reasons for being a Democrat. He was a preacher, but spoke of the dangers of mixing religion and politics. He explained that too many preachers told members of the congregation how to vote, and too many claimed that not voting Republican was a sin that God would punish. He explained that hurts religion by driving hard working liberals away from the church, and it hurts politics by making dissent seem sinful.

Then he got to Roosevelt. He had never seen FDR until the night of his story, he had only heard Roosevelt's voice on the radio. When Roosevelt got up, he was shocked to see him struggle with every step to the podium on crutches. Then he gave a powerful speech. At this point our speaker was nearly in tears. He pointed out that nobody had told him FDR had polio, and repeated how shocked he was that Roosevelt was crippled. But clearly it made a lasting impression on him, and the story he told is one I'll never forget! It wasn't just what he told us, but how he described it. Roosevelt demonstrated that a disability can be turned into an advantage, and that the strongest individuals among us are those who struggle without relief against powerful disabilities. He gave hope back to a crushed nation struggling through a depression.

God bless FDR, and God bless all who he changed for the better. :patriot:

2. Nice story, thanks.
FDR did our nation great good, without a doubt. The nation is a much better place because of him (and Elanor too). ;)

7. sorry for the delayed response..
I didn't attend the rally, but I wish I had.

I attended today's Dawson County meeting, and its great to see a growing group of Democrats each month. the former chair of our party, Betty Turner died this summer of cancer.

she headed our party from the 70's until the 90's, and it says allot about her that our party has revived and grows stronger with every meeting. she led our party when times were unbearable for Democrats in the south, and now her faith is paying off for newcomers like me! :loveya:

5. When is your next meeting?
My son and his wife live in Dawsonville. I thought I would give them a heads-up that there are Democratic Party meetings up there. I don't think that they are aware there are other Democrats in their neck of the woods.
