I received my notice of non-renewal from Allstate Floridian today. Thanks Charlie.

I had basically the same policy since 1973 on the same house with only two minor claims in that time span. Now they want to play a shell game and set me up with another company, Royal Palm Insurance. They didn't give any specifics on rates or coverage but I am expecting to have to pay at least two or three times more for probably less coverage, they said in the letter Royal Palm will be in touch. This is all pretty obvious. They are just shuffling a few papers so Allstate, the parent company, can make more money.

I am not alone ... Link: http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070523/BUSINESS/705230652

1. Hey! Me too!
But about two months ago. Mine was a newer policy, but I'm in a condo. That means that they were only liable for the contents, which wasn't a huge amount of money. I couldn't believe they'd kill a policy that had no structural damage replacement involved.

They suck. We still haven't gone to talk to Royal Palm.

2. I'm with USAA, and we're safe - for now - we just renewed earlier this month.
However, we got a letter from them stating that for the time being, they will keep existing policies in effect, but will not be writing any new policies except for active-duty military moving into Florida for a duty assignment.

If they drop my homeowners insurance, I'll certainly take my flood and auto business elsewhere.

5. Thanks for the link.

I intend to let Charlie know how I feel as well as a few others in govt and in the media. This is all about manipulating the system to make more outrageous profit.

4. On the news they talked about mitigation services and the fact that
it is the law to give discounts for protective measure that you have or have added to your house. I said this to my insurance company, (who had tripled my premium) and I just got 2 checks for $177. At this site you can find the mitigation specialists that inspect your house and from what I heard of the TV save you money.

Background

Florida Statute 626.0629 requires insurance companies to offer Florida homeowners "discounts, credits, or other rate differentials..." for construction techniques that reduce damage and loss in windstorms. Florida insurance companies were required to submit filings by March 2003 that provide for these wind mitigation discounts. The insurance company filings began to take effect during 2003.

7. Thanks for the info. But for most of us, a couple of hundred bucks
isn't the issue. I have a friend whose house is worth about $375K or so - her insurance went up to just over $6K this year. That's $175 per month more than her car payment.

Our insurance isn't strangling us yet - the renewal this year is only $2900 - but that's more than 2-1/2 times what it was when we bought the house 7 years ago. We certainly haven't received corresponding pay increases.

One of my biggest concerns is the availability of windstorm insurance without having to go through Citizens. These bastards are all willing to take my money for life, health, auto, flood, disability, homeowners, etc. But let them have a tough year or two, and they run out of here like a bunch of crybabies.
