Ed board OKs video cameras in Fairfield schools

Despite fears of some that the town is entering George Orwell's world of Big Brother watching citizens' every move, the Board of Education Tuesday unanimously approved a districtwide video surveillance policy.

The policy authorizes "the use of video cameras on all district property and school transportation vehicles to ensure the health, welfare and safety of all staff, students and visitors."

Parent Steve Diamond said he advocates the policy. "Even if there were dummy cameras, people would think twice before acting out. The thought of someone watching is enough to stop most incidents," Diamond said.

But John Dorland, president of the Fairfield Education Association, argued: "We should teach children to be good whether they're being watched or not."
