Does anybody remember the big orange roadside stands on Hwy 99
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 09:12 PM by tularetom
When I was a kid there were at least a dozen of them on the old 99 between Bakersfield and Stockton. My dad played the fiddle in an Okie band and he used to take me along to some of the dances they'd play for. If it was really hot (which it always was) he'd stop at one of these big orange drink stands and get some fresh squoze cold orange juice.

It looks like the last one of these thingies might get saved.

1. We used to always stop at stands like that on the way to Yosemite.
And the drinks and fruit would get hot in the car but, they were still so much better than anything we got in town. :)

2. I can't remember
I've never been to CA. How can I remember? I don't even know why assume I do.

3. My mom worked in one back in the thirties and laughs....
says she squeezed oranges the entire summer in the valley heat just so she could buy a coat for winter.

Our town has had four oranges through the decades what with highway/freeway reconfigurations and all. One still stands today, but the business is idled until they resolve the water and sewer issues.

4. I remember...

that here were a few of those picturesque orange juice stands on old highway 40 on the way to the north shore of Lake Tahoe from Berkeley when I was a child in the 50s.

Once the route was upgraded to the freeway it is today, in the early to mid 1960s, they were abandoned, visibly crumbled and then they just faded away, mostly. There was a surviver for quite a while either near the Milk Farm or the other large roadside restaurant/rest stop, in the same general area, whose name escapes me now. I just remembered that the other place was the Nut Tree...

5. That's the one
It used to sit adjacent to highway 40, but when it was converted to interstate the orange was moved back a distance to it's present location. It closed down a year or two ago and is for sale but the structure (the restaurant) is in really poor condition. I hope they save the actual orange and rebuild around it.

Milk Farm and Nut Tree are GONE.
