A provision of the No Child Left Behind act, the federal education law championed by President Bush, requires high schools to give military recruiters access to contact information for 11th- and 12th-grade students.
What many parents -- and even some school officials -- don't know is that the same law lets parents, with a simple note to their school, block recruiters from getting their child's phone number and address.
Perhaps as a result, very few parents at local schools have requested privacy from recruiters, school officials said.
About 10 Lincoln High School parents this fall have requested the information be withheld, officials there said. At Stagg High School, only a few have asked the school not to share their children's contact information.
While some schools send letters notifying parents of their rights, others don't, according to counselors and administrators. At Lodi High School, Principal Bill Atterberry said he didn't even know the parents could "opt out" until recently.
