OC Weekly: Campbell’s Dupe
Nov. 25 - Dec. 1, 2005

Campbell’s Dupe

Congressional candidate’s supporters wage war against Minuteman founder Gilchrist

by GUSTAVO ARELLANO

(snip)

Then Gilchrist tied illegal immigration into virtually every social ill—“the floundering public schools, bankrupt hospitals, an ever-increasing tax burden, traffic gridlock, runaway housing prices and much more.”

(snip)

GOP officials fear that Gilchrist will siphon votes from Campbell, leaving the field to Young. So, motivated by fear and a bit of revenge, they’re waging war on Gilchrist. The battlefront extends to radio, where pundit Hugh Hewitt on Nov. 3 warned Orange County listeners about casting a “wasted vote” for Gilchrist. In the blogosphere, OC Blog tried to portray him as financially reckless, revealing Oct. 31 that Gilchrist filed for bankruptcy after a series of surgeries in the 1980s.

But Campbell’s pointiest knife has been TheTruthAboutGilchrist.com. The site features an unflattering picture of Gilchrist and attempts to portray the Purple Heart veteran as just left of Stalin. The evidence? His support of same-sex marriages and higher taxes for the rich, and for telling the Weekly that big businesses that exploit immigrant labor are “capitalist pigs” (see my “The Anti-Immigrant Movement’s Trotsky,” Feb. 11).

(snip)

Indeed, Campbell has changed his rhetoric to more closely resemble Gilchrist’s. In 2000, TheOrange County Register reported that Campbell thought illegal immigrants should receive the same benefits as citizens “since the federal government has not controlled the border to prevent the immigrants from coming in.” As an Assembly member, in 2002, Campbell voted to allow illegal immigrants in state universities to pay in-state tuition and approved the use of Mexican government-issued ID cards for official purposes.

Campbell has since renounced such positions, claiming Democrats deceived him into the votes. But Bartlett doesn’t think rank-and-file Republicans are so forgiving. “Deep down inside,” Bartlett says, “the party bosses know that the silent majority of their members support Jim and what he has done.”

3. This is going to be such a low turnout
as was the primary, that if even half of the registered Democrats in the district - about 100,000 - will vote for Young, he will win.

Perhaps only one term but oh, how sweet this will be.

Yes, getting out the vote is important and I don't know that he has this machine to work for him. If only the Democratic establishment understood this.

2. Steve Young might pull an upset
He's being backed by Maxine Waters and she generally only backs people who are really credible. Loretta Sanchez is behind him to. I'm hoping the Republican vote is split in two and Steve can win the seat.

5. I just addressed about 150 postcards
going 2 Trabuco Canyon urging Democrats 2 turnout 'n vote for Steve ('n I don't even live in his district).

3 most important points in this run-off
1. Voter Turnout
2. Voter Turnout
3. Voter Turnout

Only 60,000 votes were cast in the October election so voter turnout is very, very important.

7. outta those 60,000 votes, do you know how many went to Young?
In 2004, 65% went to Cox. It seems that if the conservatives split it up enough, Young may be able to pull out with 35%. It's true that Young is the only liberal in the runoff, right? If that's so, the two other conservbatives will split it up even more. This will be nice =)

8. I'm not certain what his vote count was.
There are 109,000 registered Democrats in the 48th, so a turnout of dems wouls do it. There are around 300,000 registered rethugs so U can see voter turnout was very, very light.

9. wow.
I wonder how this'll turnout then. I think that the Dems will be more prone to show up in high numbers than repugs. I have a feeling that if Young wins this, he's going to only serve for a short amount of time or be able to grab hold of teh incumbent advantages immediately to win re election narrowly in time for re districting I guess.

10. Only 90,000 voted in the primary
http://www.ocgov.com/election/Live/e26/results.htm and Steve Young received less than 8,000 votes. However many Democrats voted for moderate Republican Marylin Brewer rationalizing that this is a Republican district so might as well go for the lesser of two evils. Especially since she was maligned so much by the Republican powers that be.

I suspect that the turnout this time will be even lower, so if even half the registered Democrats will go out and vote, Young can win.

11. That's what we're telling the people we call
if half of the Democrats show up to vote, Steve wins! This one will come down to voter turnout.
