ALABAMA GOP CHAIR PURCHASES PLANE TICKET FOR DEMOCRAT PARTY HEAD HOWARD DEAN TO VISIT ALABAMA

Birmingham - In advance of a Friday night Birmingham appearance by Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, state GOP chair Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh said she hopes to soon lure his counterpart for a visit, and she has even purchased an airline gift certificate for his use.

"The Alabama Republican Party is proud to host our national chairman and hear him outline the GOP's conservative vision for our nation and our state," Cavanaugh said. "Alabamians deserve to hear where the Democrats want to lead us, as well, so we have extended an invitation to Howard Dean and bought a plane ticket for his use. He should come to our state, stand next to Lucy Baxley and outline, precisely, where the Democrats stand on issues like abortion, taxes, Second Amendment rights, and gay marriage."

A letter of invitation offering the plane ticket was sent to Dean on Friday, and Cavanaugh said she would carry the voucher from Southwest Airlines with her to various speeches and events until Dean accepts.

Cavanaugh noted that a visit to Alabama would allow Dean, who once said "I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks," to reach out to southern voters.

It would also allow him to explain to Alabamians certain statements he has made that seem outside the mainstream, such as, "The issue is not abortion. The issue is whether women can make up their own mind instead of some right-wing pastor, some right-wing politician telling them what to do."

The GOP chair said the Alabama Democrat Party and its candidates accept thousands of dollars from the national party and, every four years, unite behind its liberal presidential candidates, but claim they are "different" when state elections occur.

"The Alabama Democrat Party can't hold hands with the national party when nobody is looking and run away when it's convenient," Cavanaugh said. "To paraphrase another well-known Alabamian - there's not a dime's worth of difference between the national and Alabama Democrat parties."

TEXT OF LETTER TO HOWARD DEAN

July 14, 2006

Chairman Howard Dean
Democratic National Committee
430 S. Capitol St. SE
Washington, DC 20003

Dear Chairman Dean,

During recent preparations for the Alabama Republican Party's Annual Summer Dinner, which is being keynoted by RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, I was struck by the fact that very few, if any, of the national Democrat Party leadership has made a recent high-profile trip to our state.

While Chairman Mehlman, Vice President Cheney and even President Bush have made recent, highly-publicized visits to Alabama, we have not had the courtesy of a visit from yourself. I know that several years ago, while still governor of Vermont, you visited our state to talk politics with Don Siegelman, who was recently convicted on federal corruption charges, but I am unaware of any recent trips you have made.

Because I know, especially during this election year, the importance of pointing out each party's' vision for both our state and our nation, I would like to extend a special invitation from the Alabama GOP. I have purchased, on your behalf, a voucher for a round-trip flight from Washington, D.C. to Alabama. It is available for your use to come to our state, meet with your party's gubernatorial nominee, Lucy Baxley, and publicly outline the positions of the national Democrat Party on any number of issues.

Should you decide to take me up on this offer, please contact the state GOP headquarters, and we will be happy to make arrangements.

With best regards and deep hopes that we will see you in Alabama soon,

Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh
Chairman, Alabama Republican Party

1. Do you have an e-mail or web link for this letter?
You should write back and demand that they use the term 'Democratic Party'.

4. Here's the reply I sent:
Just so you know, it's the "Democratic Party", not the "Democrat Party". Please correct this on all of your future emails. This makes us appear ignorant.

Sincerely,

Melissa

5. Critique: I would have written 'you' instead of 'us.'
Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 03:19 PM by CottonBear
It is the GOP that is ignorant and mean not us Democrats.

For instance, I once called Jack Kingston's (R-GA) office after he used 'Democrat' instead of 'Democratic' repeatedly on CSPAN WJ. I said: "'Democrat' is a noun and 'Democratic' is an adjective. My party is the Democratic Party. Mr. Kingston repeatledly refered to the "Democrat Party' this morning on CSPAN. I know he's a fellow UGA graduate so he can't be doing it because he's not able to speak correctly or he is ill-educated. And, I certainly hope he's not doing it to be purposefully rude or mean. Either is bad. Please ask him to use the correct gramar and verbage in the future. Thank you."

8. Twinkle? You're f***ing kidding me! Twinkle?
I am a former proud common sense Alabama Democrat. I am soooooo sick of their shit. Tell Mehlman to talk about the great success of Iraq, explain to the mothers of the Alabama National Guard why their sons and daughters are not coming home and why their children did not die in vain. Explain why their elected representatives want to vote discrimination into the Constitution. Explain why their elected representatives do not support the Voting Rights Act extension. Explain why in the face of huge deficits the elected leadership votes for tax breaks for the privileged and cuts benefits to the most vulnerable of your citizenry. Explain why the underclass has to sacrafice for the rich man's war. Explain why the corporatists/big business gets all the breaks and the rest of us can't buy one. Explain why the pharmaceutical companies create medications that are harmful and exploit the advertising audience with misleading ads and phony illnesses, and still get the government's imprimatur on a mandated prescription benefit bill to extort the elderly. Explain why the petroleum industry has the greatest profits in the history of the capitalist world, and common people pay every day at the pump. Explain why they have a party that pits ethnic group vs. ethnic group, religion vs. science/reason and faith, men against women, heterosexuals v. same sex couples. Explain why the great "decider" wants to prevent stem cell research, denies the existence of global warming, and spends more resources and money down the shit-hole of Iraq than for the minority citizens of his own country.
Tell Mehlman to come out of the closet in Alabama. In more ways than one.
I am a Christian man. That is my faith. Please get your (and my) religion out of my government.

Twinkle. Really.

We need to get her out their on the national Repiglican Scene. Twinkle.

"Twinkle, Twinkle, little fascist . . ."

Nah, that doesn't scan.

Here's a pic of Miss Twinkle http://www.algop.org/About/Default.aspx?SectionId=42 I just *knew* she'd look like an aging majorette! OK, sports fans! Bets! Alabama or Auburn?

I've gotta cover this on "Head-On." www.headonradionetwork.com No doubt about it. It's not just every day you get to hammer a Repiglican named "Twinkle."

On Edit: adding link to Twinkle's picture

15. I went to Auburn with her!
She was in my Education Studies classes. I think she was a teacher for a while. She is from a well off family that had more money then sense back then, so I can only imagine now! She drove a new Saab in college. I drove a Ford Maverick and worked. I doubt she worked a day in her life until graduation.

I remember the first day of our first class together, she walked in, introduced her self as Twinkle. The looks on everyone's faces was priceless.

She was not a majorette, just an over blown, made up sorority princess.

We need a constitutional amendment to ensure that all southern princesses named "Twinkle" get to be at least a cheerleader!

Can you out the Sorority? Tri-Delt? D-G? Zeta girl?

We *must* know!

She was an Alpha Delta Pi. Or as they called themselves, if I remember correctly, the Alpha Delta "Cutie" Pi's!

The picture is so small in my AU yearbooks that I don't know if they'll scan. I'll give it a try.

Of *course* she was an A-D-Pi! They called themselves "Cutie" Pi's at Bama, too!

I'm looking for Twinbkle's e-mail addy. I want to tell her what fun I've been having with her on Head-On. Tell her that her worst nightmare is "out there:" intelligent liberals who won't put up with their games.

21. A few minutes googling Twinkle turned up some interesting dirt:
She moonlights for a Scanlon/Abranhoff company in Casino Land, Mississippi! She claims she had it put in her contract that she would never, ever, ever, double swear, ever, touch that dirty gambling in her job! Oh Twinkle, I'm so glad you went to Auburn! since I went to Creighton, UNA and UA for grad school!

12. Amen!
On all counts! And America needs to hear Southerners saying so.

Syrinx, here at the Head-On Radio Network, we're trying to do what no one else has. We have Southerners as hosts and, while the programming is literally global, we have a decidedly Southern flavor. We've had lots of comments from listeners who are so encouraged to hear Progressive ideas spoken in Southern accents.

Because we don't have a huge PR budget, we have to do it the old-fashioned way: by doing the best conversation radio possible and by word-of-mouth.

Give us a listen sometime. And if you like what you hear, please tell other Red State Progressives that they have a voice and means of sharing it with the world.

14. I will be doing that! Thanks for letting me know!
I've seen benburch's posts about Head On and the Bob Kincaid Show and I've been meaning to give it a listen, but I haven't got around to it yet. I had no idea of its Southern-Progressive orientation.

I think I'll download a show as I sleep to check it out. (I'm still on dialup out here in the woods.)

Thanks for cluing me in! :hi:

BTW, Dean has shown up in Utah, Idaho, and Mississippi this year. I haven't seen Bush in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, or Vermont.

22. Twinkle was the prom queen at one of our local high schools. I think she
was either a year or so ahead of me and I went to a different HS, but one of my best friends went to school with her. She was a complete shallow twit back then as well.

I was eating lunch at a place in Montgomery called the Farmer's Market Cafe in downtown. Many local attys, politicians, etc. eat there. A group of young people that were obviously part of Gov. Riley's office were eating and sitting behind us and as usual, they are rather stupid and don't think about the fact they shouldn't talk about everything in an open environment. They were going off on Patsy Riley, apparently called Peppermint Patsy (i'm not sure if they call her that or everyone "inside" does), talking about what an idiot she is and whew they had a lot to say about Miss Twinkle! They thought she was a complete moron and also a big, fat cow according to the conversation. LOL Just think, these are the people who work for them.

I personally think that Dean should definitely come here and talk about what the Democratic Party stands for! I wouldn't take any money from the GOP since we know a great deal of it is corrupt, but he should definitely come and when he does, invite Miss Twinkle to listen to him speak.
