Pat Buchanan offers highly cogent analysis of Obama Peace Prize (for real)
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 12:19 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
1. It is silly for Republicans to attack Obama for something he didn't do -- he didn't award himself the prize and was as surprised as anyone else.

2. Premature? So what? Prize often given for work in progress as a stamp of approval of a direction more than of a list of accomplishments.

2. Nobel Prize Committee maximizing their leverage through encouragement. Awarding the prize cannot help but color future courses of action--Afghanistan, nuke proliferation, middle-east

28. No problem. I admit it took me by surprise, too. And without his castrati voice, either.
Usually when our friend pat buchanan starts getting upset or outraged, his voice starts climbing in pitch. Sometimes it goes to veritable dog-whistle levels! This time, he was as measured and grown-up as can be. Quite startling to witness, but there it was. Saw it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. Absolutely snark-free.

25. Not really...
...Pat Buchanan was never a toe-the-line Republican. He has often been at odds with the standard party position. For example, he was always against the Iraq incursion. He is more of a populist than the standard Republican; unfortunately, he is also possibly even more of a bigot than the standard Republican.

27. Buchanan's a weirdly broken clock that can be right up to three or four times a day
He Gets It(tm) on some issues and is a University of Mars alumnus on others.

5. Buchanan's fascinating - he spoke out against Bush IIRC.

He's as right as they get, but has many startling moments of total clarity.

Good for you Pat, on this one.

8. He is like Uncle Eddy in Christmas Vacation...
Sometimes someone turns on a microwave and he pisses himself.

In other words, most of the time he's a total douchebag, but there are moments of sanity in there.

You just need the right microwave, I guess.

13. He's an old-style conservative -- more nativist than imperialist
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 12:13 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Kind of like Ron Paul... there are many paths to disfavoring the Iraq invasion. (Or NAFTA)

Some paleo-conservatives are so America-First that they just don't like being involved with foreign countries at all if it can be avoided.

Not the best approach by any measure, but a tad better than the neo-cons.

30. Buchanan is reading the political down side perfectly
He knows damned well and good that if the GOP bashes Obama over this award and Obama goes on to make some breakthrough in peace in, say, the Middle East, they're toast.

32. And for those that miss 'Pat the Clown' he is scheduled to be back on Monday

Buchanan reminds me of the guys you used to meet at Debate (remember when they had debate). They constantly would take some completely unreasonable position simply to see how they could push it.

I remember one guy arguing and winning a debate on Judicial Reform because the First affirmative failed to define the term "log jam" in his opening. The first negative spent the entire 7 minutes talking about how ineffective logging practices had nothing to do with the court system. It was clever and yes he was right but well it was very much like Pat Buchanan. 70% of the time he is arguing positions that I don't think he even considers reasonable.
