Real or Satire? I report, you decide!
She writes pretty horribly for a journalism major either way. Not shrill enough for Fox Noize, and not edgy enough for The Onion. Here goes...

AGAINST ALL ODDS: Speech detrimental
By Ashlie Rodriguez, Staff Columnist

Published: Monday, September 14, 2009

Our nation’s youth is being brainwashed. President Barack Obama recently spoke to schools nationwide, indoctrinating them with his personal beliefs. While many see the backlash of this supposedly inspirational speech as unpatriotic, conservatives have good reason to be upset and worried for their children.

Obama’s address to schoolchildren was shocking. The speech focused on themes of staying in school and a personal responsibility for one’s education. These topics are all well and good, but the medium through which Obama forced response was extremely concerning.

If Obama had simply given a speech, just as previous presidents have done, there would have been no uproar or conservative backlash. Instead, he went too far by disguising his opportunistic, self-promoting appeal to innocent schoolchildren, helpless to know otherwise.

Obama coded his messaging with words and references children could not ignore. He used vernacular that was easy to listen to, he made references to new media Web sites such as Facebook, and even encouraged positive self-esteem when he told the children that “Every single one of you has something that you’re good at.”

8. Wow. Unbelievable
Sentence after sentence of unsupported claims, that they probably think you will forget by the time they layer on the next one. Odd. Strange that people really think like that.

3. Heh. Communications majors are only one very small step above education majors...
in scholastic ability, on the whole.

9. Below....
Everyone that has no interest and is in school because their parents tell them to be is a comm major. Its normally an unmotivated, intellectually incurious group who has little regard for education as a whole.

And I like making generalizations. But, whatever...thats my experience

18. Well, your experience is not everything.
Believe it or not, there are communications AND journalism majors who are smart, work hard, and can produce a piece of writing a damn sight better than this.

*sigh* The amount of "degree snobbism" on DU is astounding. It really came out when people found out Sarah Palin was a "communications major." Ever since then, those of us who actually HAVE brains and CHOSE to major in journalism or communications have been treated like we're one step above imbeciles. When the truth is, Sarah Palin and the author of this...uh...thing are exemplary only of the absolute worst of the lot.

17. Here we go...same DU'er, blanket insulting communications majors again.
Perhaps if San Diego State University had a REAL journalism school, this person would have learned how to spell, use grammar and punctuation, and write an editorial in which she was able to clearly present a persuasive opinion and back it up with facts.

They DO teach that at REAL journalism schools. And the scholastic ability of THEIR students is a hell of a lot higher than this.

7. As a professor-in-training...
I would give that article an F for critical thinking and an F- for grammar, especially considering this person is a journalism SENIOR.

Jeez louise, I'm dumber for having read that.

11. Check out this mess of a sentence:
"While some extreme conservatives framed his speech as socialist propaganda, these critics were more concerned with his political views, which Obama did not delve into."

Or this one:

"Instead, he went too far by disguising his opportunistic, self-promoting appeal to innocent schoolchildren, helpless to know otherwise."

10. Since when does asking a question of someone prevent them
from thinking for themselves. Isn't it the exact fucking opposite? It encourages one to think.

Ok, I guess its not satire but it could easily have been written by the Onion in my opinion.

16. Reality, satire -- such passe concepts!
Let's face it: we're in the age of satality. Neither satire nor reality can exist by themselves in the age of satality -- they have merged, so can no longer persist as separate entities.
