Beck Story goes mainstream: AP: Beck has lost 33 sponsors - "toxic asset"

http://www.rr.com/news/politics/article/rr/9009/8719386/Attack_on_Obama_riles_Becks_advertisers/1

NEW YORK -- Glenn Beck returns to Fox News Channel after a vacation on Monday with fewer companies willing to advertise on his show than when he left, part of the fallout from calling President Barack Obama a racist.

A total of 33 Fox advertisers, including Walmart, CVS Caremark, Clorox and Sprint, directed that their commercials not air on Beck's show, according to the companies and ColorofChange.org, a group that promotes political action among blacks and launched a campaign to get advertisers to abandon him. That's more than a dozen more than were identified a week ago.

While it's unclear what effect, if any, this will ultimately have on Fox and Beck, it is already making advertisers skittish about hawking their wares within the most opinionated cable TV shows.

The Clorox Co., a former Beck advertiser, now says that "we do not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show hosts." The maker of bleach and household cleaners said in a statement that is has decided not to advertise on political talk shows.

The shows present a dilemma for advertisers, who usually like a "safe" environment for their messages. The Olbermanns, Hannitys, O'Reillys, Maddows and Becks of the TV world are more likely to say something that will anger a viewer, who might take it out on sponsors.

. .

ColorofChange.org quickly targeted companies whose ads had appeared during Beck's show, telling them what he had said and seeking a commitment to drop him. The goal is to make Beck a liability, said James Rucker, the organization's executive director. "They have a toxic asset," Rucker said. "They can either clean it up or get rid of it."

1. Shame about Clorox really.
If there's one show on TV that could use repeated bleaching, it's Beck's.

22. I tuned into Beck on Saturday...
...and I can't believe that enormous, self-absorbed nutjob he has become.

He is trying to incite an army of inflamed ingrates to revolt. He actually
said that Obama thinks America belongs to him, but it really belongs to "Him"--
as in God. Beck then unleashed a "I will not allow Barack Obama to disparage
our Lord..." diatribe.

Beck sounded so serious...and he was speaking slowly and deliberately--as if he
had anointed himself the all-important king of the dipshits who just had to
revolt and take back the country for the Lord.

I have listened to Beck from time to time for about five years. I never
agreed with him, but he was pretty entertaining. Now, he sounds like a complete
lunatic.

Beck is a former alcoholic. Is he back on the sauce again or what?

He sounds more serious than ever and more completely absurd ever--and he seems
completely oblivious to how ridonculous he sounds.

the ones who cross the lines should be the ones they avoid - it is very possible for political shows to be informative and thoughtful without resorting to outrageous, ridiculous claims

has started with Beck. And probably wisely so. Rush is the bigger established name, and the harder case because of it. Set an example with an easier subject, and later cases will have precedent to draw on.

13. You're right, Frenchie.
Previously, when companies got complaints about their ads on crazy talk show host programs, their excuse was: Well, we just buy this ad package, and the people who count the ratings and beans place our ads where they go. In other words, they blamed an intermediary.

How ridiculous that a company wouldn't care about something like that.

ColorofChange, no doubt, called the companies on this.

20. And you'll find many of Beck supporters say the same thing in his defense.
That's the point. There are some things Olbermann might have said which could be taken as too aggressive. I have nevr seen anything as inflammatory as Beck and O'Reilly calling out for violence against others. But there are have been volatile comments he's made when he does his Special Comments and/or throwing the violence he berates from an individual onto the individual. Like I wasn't cool with his whole thing of paying Hannity to be waterboarded.

26. Olbermann is more like Limbaugh in the sense that neither of them
will face guests with whom they disagree.

At least Rachel has the guts to do it.

As for whether any of the ones mentioned "say anything that is not true"...I'm sure they all have. To different degrees, sure, but to elevate a TV news reader or opinion-sharer to a point where you think they're always telling the truth...that's a little scary.

It's about the money. No company can survive with support from only the 20% of the people that still support this kind of nut-job. The power always lies with the money. Money from 80% is better! Especially when we speak up!
