New Ad: Health Care Bill Will Deprive Seniors Of Care If They're Not "Worth The Cost"

By Eric Kleefeld

Check out this ad from a right-wing group called the 60 Plus Association, celebrating the Greatest Generation -- and warning that the health care bill could kill them:

<...>

"The government -- not doctors -- will decide if older patients are worth the cost," the announcer says, in an echo of Sarah Palin's "death panel" remarks.

A representative for the group told us that this is a national ad buy, and that the price for it is $1.5 million.

1. I don't think ANY rw's are "worth the cost"--can I deny them healthcare?

15. Gov Boosh already passed that law in Texas
pull the plug law,

..."Scott McClellan defended a law Bush signed as governor of Texas in 1999:

The legislation he signed is consistent with his views. You know, this is a complex case and I don’t think such uninformed accusations offer any constructive ways to address this matter…

rior to the passage of the ‘99 legislation that he signed, there were no protections…The legislation was there to help ensure that actions were being taken that were in accordance with the wishes of the patient or the patient’s family.

McClellan’s statement grossly distorts the nature of the law. The law does not ensure that actions are taken “in accordance with the wishes of the patient or the patient’s family.” In fact it codifies and legalizes the ability of doctors to stop treatment even if it goes against the explicit directive of the patient or the patient’s family.

Check out Section 166.046, Subsection (e):
If the patient or the person responsible for the health care decisions of the patient is requesting life-sustaining treatment that the attending physician has decided and the review process has affirmed is inappropriate treatment, the patient shall be given available life-sustaining treatment pending transfer under Subsection (d). The patient is responsible for any costs incurred in transferring the patient to another facility. The physician and the health care facility are not obligated to provide life-sustaining treatment after the 10th day after the written decision required under Subsection (b) is provided to the patient or the person responsible for the health care decisions of the patient …"

2. (shrug) Really, all of this is simply another test of how stupid Americans are...
If Americans are sufficiently stupid, republicans will win. If not, we will.

6. Sorry but the "Greatest Generation" is more like the 80 Plus Association.
and who are they trying to fool? Things COULD NOT BE WORSE THAN THEY ALREADY ARE for the elderly when it comes to long term care. It's everyones worse nightmare RIGHT NOW
having to deal with the expenses involved with taking care of an elderly family member who can't manage for themselves. What sort of plan do these bastards propose
as an alternative to Obama??

7. Seniors already have government healthcare and not one has faced a "death panel"
If people are too stupid to realize that, then it's already over.

8. Time for Obama to invoke Roosevelt's "Nothing to fear but fear itself"
If anyone can relate to this phrase they can. It's really disgusting how they are terrifying the very people that health care reform would help in order to prevent them from getting the advantages of the changes.

Obama needs to slam them good for using fear and remind people that that is what Bush did for 8 years and it needs to stop.

9. Don't insurance companies do that right now?
Recissions, denying treatment for costly long term care, etc, etc....

Do they or not?

10. The ad is implying that it's preferable that doctors, today, decide if older patients...
Edited on Mon Aug-10-09 05:51 PM by stevietheman
are worth the cost. Huh? That they endorse *anyone* making decisions like this is rather telling.

The reality is that we're dealing with private health insurance bureaucrats who are arbitrarily denying claims, essentially deciding that many patients, old or not, are not worth the cost.
