In Cairo, Obama Knocks it Out of the Park

By Craig Crawford | June 4, 2009 7:05 AM | Permalink | Comments (2)

There's nothing like an Obama speech high. Thankfully, I was up early this morning to hear the live broadcast of our President's 6:10 AM ET address to the Muslim world in Cairo. It was a moment that made good on the promise of this man to begin the process of transforming relations and undermining terrorists.

"You have the ability to reimagine the world," Obama to young Muslims at Cairo University.

For the first time since Jimmy Carter's Camp David accords we have a president with the skills, understanding and commitment to make a real difference in a region that has bedeviled the world for generations. Carter's 1978 brokering of a deal between Egypt and Israel to recognize each other and pursue peace still stands as the only lasting agreement of its kind since those days.

Obama's phenomenal speech gracefully shifted from historical tensions to current conflicts between Muslim nations and the western world. Without taking sides he was not shy about noting the wrongdoing of extremists on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, for instance.

Perhaps his most controversial words at home will turn out to be calling Afghanistan a war of necessity, while labeling Iraq a "war of choice." Although Obama has said such things before, his political foes will probably seize upon his decision to say it on foreign soil.

But acknowledging that the invasion of Iraq was a mistake -- or at least seeming to say so -- will probably do more to impress the Muslim world than just about anything else in this great speech.

1. He started out by saying "I'm going to be honest" and by golly he was. Iraq was a war of choice.

2. By being honest and acknowledging mistakes...
shows it's more important than ever to hold those responsible for the mistakes accountable.

40. I thought the
same thing as you, otherwise it's just words.......

He spoke about torture/gitmo, but I don't think anyone will be held accountable.

However, the speech was a good first step, time will tell, if it is backed-up by deeds................

3. Yes, I'm proud of our Country when I see Obama overseas. What a refreshing change compared
to the last, swaggering braggart of a President.

Yes, Obama did US proud. :patriot: :-)

27. I don't know if you're post is in line with what you say.
Obama seemed to be explaining why we we still had troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, your post where you stated you "left the Obama choir" and would go into "lurkdom" was a thread basically against the war. I'm just finding it hard to believe that you loved his speech and what he says when he was also stating his justification and his position which you found to be more in line with Bush.

 It just doesn't make sense to me.

Don't be too shocked - Joe Scar tweeted this: "President Obama's speech in Cairo was historic. I suggest that Republicans show a patriotic grace and salute the president's success."

Funny because it wont happen but I'll give him props for at least acknowledging how great the speech was today.

MSNBC will replay the entire speech at 12:00 pm today.

10. Joe has constantly stated that Obama is a masterful speaker
and he's generally complimented many points made in past speeches.

Then, they bring Cheney's spawn Liz on and Joe immediately starts flip-flopping on what he said less than 2 minutes prior.

16. The main problem with Morning Joe is that none of the host will hold constant POV's
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 08:13 AM by Mike Daniels
They constantly switch their POV's throughout the show (Joe will praise one moment and then come the next segment condemn what he just praised).

They honestly can't try to make the point that Mika is the liberal counterpoint as she switches back and forth more than Joe does often changing her POV in mid-sentence.

Barnicle (sp?) seems to play the reverse of Joe more consistently but he's too quick to change direction if a guest comes on that holds a similar POV to his.

It makes for a maddening experience.

9. This is why I voted for Obama over Hillary.
His unique prospective, forged by his upbringing and background will give the US a real shot at repairing its image around the world. He is also very well versed in history, etc. and takes nothing for granted and welcomes all opinions. I don't think we've ever truly seen that before in our history, with the exception of maybe Thomas Jefferson.

21. Good rhetoric, little follow through
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 10:04 AM by Day And Night
Obama is very, very good at rhetoric. I have to admit that after 8 years of the Bush regime -- it's nice to have an intelligent, charismatic leader giving inspirational, uplifting speeches. However, despite Obama's rhetoric, his actions are at odds with his assertions. He talks the talk beautifully, too bad he doesn't walk it too often.

24. Well.. for example
Well, his actions are definitely at odds with his rhetoric. For example, keeping state secrets and rendition, watered down healthcare bill, limping on DADT and gitmo, being punked by cheney, that detainee photographic records protection act -- all these actions are at odds with what he campaigned on during his run for the Presidency. I look to a man's actions, not to his rhetoric to determine their character. Also, I just registered today. I don't intend to do a 'one post hit and run' but thanks for throwing that out. One Love.

34. Well, it's a common stragetic response..
When you can't refute one's points, pretend they didn't say anything. Look, Obama has done everything that I've outlined above and they are all from credible sources. I don't use 'fox news' or any of that shit. You need to get your head out of the sand.

I've already responded to several of those points in the past. I'm not going to sit there and refute your points of stupidity. When you listed Gitmo and several of your other contentions I was like this guy is full of shit. EVERYONE who is following the news on Gitmo can't put ONE shred of blame on Obama. Well, everyone excluding you--which says to me you're not up to date or not really on top of the news as you say you are. So at that point I was like your post is full of shit and you're not keeping up with the news. I don't think you are up to date on any news, for that matter.

25. practical much?
presidents cant move as quick as you might want them to, but trust me, obama didnt have to make any speeches or do anything. he could have taken a hands off approach, or be like bush and use his policies to defend his domestic political strategy. we would be much worse off if he decided to do that. sorry that giving a speech isnt yeilding the fireworks you are expecting.
