I had my candidate interview with the WFP nomination committee this week
Edited on Mon May-25-09 10:23 AM by mdmc
I am looking to run for city council as a working families party (WFP) democrat (D). I am looking to secure the WFP line, and the Democratic Party line (by winning the democratic party primary).

The Conservative and Republican parties have crossed endorsed my opposition - a couple of democrats.

There are actually no republicans running for city council. There are 6 democrats (myself included) running for 2 seats.

My WFP interview was much about politics (winning the election) and less about policy. It was obvious that I stood lock step with working families on every issue. The endorsement committee asked very little about my positions, and focused mostly on strategy.

The main point of contention - how to stop the GOP cross endorsed democrats from getting into power. The campaign is complex.

That is what I've been up to over the last week. Trying to figure out a political solution to move my city forward.

1. Party identification in local politics is alot different.
Due to the smaller areas you are running in a lot of times you have Republicans who are really democrats and vice versa. There are a lot less pockets of competitive General Elections during primaries.

3. For decades, everyone on the township board was a Dem
even if they voted as Republicans. My Dad, who was on the township board himself for a few years, told me the reason why was custom. Long ago, there were only Dems that ran for a seat on the board so only a Democratic primary was held. The primary then became the real election and the general election held in the fall simply formalized the results. Later, when a Republican wanted to run, they registered as a Democrat. My father also told me that my grandmother, who herself served on the board for decades, was in fact a die hard Republican even though she was registered as a Democrat.

4. yeah..yup..yup
I am a very leftist democrat, but I have a great deal of support from the local GOP - they know that I am a thinker, and a hard worker. It is very hard for me to imagine that the loyal opposition is my bedrock of support..

2. Consult your state reps and senators if you haven't done so already.
Ask about the VAN Vote Builder.

Consult with your mayor if a Democrat.

6. Yes, you want Vote Builder
It is an amazing tool. I used it on the Obama campaign and use it for all the local races I'm in.
