Mark Green's "Name the October Surprise" contest
http://nametheoctobersurprise.com/

I invite readers to submit entries to the "Name the October Surprise" contest by answering this question: "What do you think is a possible October Surprise that Bush will announce in order to try to win a close election?"

This contest emerges out of history -- political history and Bush history.

First, a president or party in power with the ability to create reality or affect events has in the past tried to influence elections with late revelations. The best modern example occurred in 1972 when then National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger announced at the end of the Nixon-McGovern campaign that "peace is at hand" with Vietnam. This was near-perfect example of an O.S. because it provided an upbeat answer to a vexing problem for the incumbent...and couldn't be disproven by Election Day.

4. It will an announcement about Osama alright
I think they will announce his capture on Sunday 10/31.
In time to catch the Sunday morning talk shows and the preachers in the pulpit.
No chance for any one to confirm before election.

the repugs haven't touched on that yet, next month repug talking points will spread rumors that kerry is sick again and is keeping it quiet, there will be rampant speculation that he's wearing a wig, O'Reilly will chide kerry on talking points "to take off the damn wig" you're going to hear Paul Tsongas mentioned much more often.

6. Seriously? Well If I would hazard a quess, bush and company
allow an attack to hit our shores close to the election...in the ensuing chaos, the people once again become fearful mindless drones and then Boom, Bush appears on everyone's TV claiming to be the great messiah at the same time urging his countryman to go vote and help him in keeping this great land of ours protected and free of attack..

Ummm, it won't occur to those fearful that ummm, duh, we got attacked again and on Bush's watch no less, twice? They will believe he is their only hope of safety, Shock is a crazy thing...

7. I think it will be an averted fake "terra" attack.
They have so diminished the importance of OBL that I just don't think it will have the impact that it once might have had.

They need to prove that this country is still in grave danger from terrorism and they will need some kind of attack - real or "averted" to convince the public that we can't change leadership when security issues are at the forefront.

Something disastrous would distract people momentarily from the shitty economy, erosion of civil rights, and handing the government over to corporations and the church.
